Crusade On Loafers.
As the result nf a vigorous crusade
which has been started l>y the Atlanta
police department, thirty-one ruses
were tried before the recorder Thurs
day morning of men charged with
Idling ami loafing on the public street*,
of the thirty-one rases, thirty were
proved and the oifenders convicted and
lined. Four of the offenders were white
men. the others being negroes. The
crusade Is being conducted by Officer*
Rowan, Rosser, t'nngler nnd Starnes,
who are working In the business sec
tion of the city In plain clothes.

'Cincinnati, Ohio, May *1.—Seventeen
persons were Injured, one fatally, In
a collision between an automobile
owned hy Dr. J. C. Atkins, of 124 Ho
rn street, and two ntreet cars, on Vina
street hill yesterday. The chauffeur
tried to pass, between a Mill Creek
valley ear southbound and a Vine nnd
Norwood car northbound. Immediate
ly after the collision, the tank of the
nutnmoblle exploded, throwing the
burning oil over both cars, as well as
the automobile.
Dr. Atkina, Bertha and Eugenia Nul-
aon, slaters, and Chauffeur Walter
Loevll, colored, who were In the auto
mobile, were seriously burned.
Thirteen passengers In one of the
cars were slightly Injured.

man, walked Into the police station
Wednesday afternoon to'see Police Call

behind the bars. Pylant ts wanted on
a charge of contempt of court, and a
warrant Ja also said to be outstanding
against him. He waa wanted by Of
ficer Dorset!, who had instructed Of-
ncer Coket" to be on the lookout for
him. Officer Domett was not In the
station when Pylant called, but Officer
Coker, on ascertaining the man's Iden

time of his death had an expectancy of

Campbell, proprietor of Barnes' Hotel
annex, In Pearl street, was murdered
shortly after 1 o'clock this morning;.
The woman’s husband Is locked up at
police headquarters.
It Is claimed by Inmates of the ho
tel that Campbell and hla wife quar
reled, there wus the sound of a fall,
and when the occupants of adjoining
rooms rushed In they found the hus
band standing over the body of hls
wife, a bloody hunting knife In hla
hand. He was promptly arretted.
Campbell waa the woman’s third
husband, and a former boarder. They
had been married but a year. Both
were above sixty years of age.

atate senate In session at Baton Rouge
has passed unanimously a bill, under
the terms of which the people of this
city will vote to decide whether or not
the sewerage and water board, that
lias charge of the Improvement of the
sewerage, water nnd drainage systems,
shall be authorised to Issue 33,000,000
worth of bonds to carry on this work.
It Is believed that the house of repre
sentatives will concur and that the
measure wilt be Anally passed. If in
dorsed by the people this means that
within a few years cisterns will be
abolished In New Orleans nnd the city’s
supply of drinking wnter will come
from the Mississippi river, the water of
which, when Altered, Is declared to be
of line quality.

the national memorial exercises, a

National cemetery came near adding a
tragedy lo the ceremonies.
A row among the mass of black and
tan humanity which had abandoned
work for the day ended In a fusillade of
bullets being flred Into the crowd. One
negro was shot In the head, he nar
rowly escaping death, while the fright

of John Delahunty against Richard
Canfield waa resumed In the auprems
court because of the possibility of as
tounding revelations where men weie
threatened upon Delahunty'a cross-ex
amination.
The compact between the lawyers to
keep secret the names of Canfield's
patrons had gone to smash, and the
whole Inside story of the gambling es
tablishment may be told.
Denies Whitney Played.

liam C. Whitney had been mentioned
as n frequenter of the place, accord
ing to Chief of Police Murphy, of Jer
sey City, who arrested David 8. Busk-

In reference to Mr. Whitney, how

say too emphatically that the late Mr.
