South can boast of two more magnlflcent gift, from any source than the splendid or gan and exquisitely beautiful baptistry of the new First Baptist church, pre sented by the women of thnt congrega tion. The organ, noble In proportion and design, of unsurpassed tone quality, and costing the munificent sum of |5,- 0*0, I. the gift to the church of the faithful women of the First Baptist congregation. The Instrument Is entire ly devoid of decoration and ornamen tation and In Its simp), line, with Ita great undeeorated brass pipes reach ing almost to the celling, from a dark oak bote, It la In artistic accord with the well-nigh perfect architectural de sign of the splendid edifice. Toward the purchase of this glorious organ the women of the congregation gener ously contributed, thus erecting In their unselfish, Christian zeal a monument which for many, innny years will tell In hymn and anthem of the loyalty and devotion of tireless women workers. Beginning at the rostrum with Ita chaste handsome brass furnishingsand reaching up to the organ loft, where It terminates In a graceful balustrade, la the exquisite baptistry of white marble. Across the entire width of the rostrum the marble column, and archsa extend, while a central arch, broad and gener ously proportioned, covers a pert of the baptismal pooj beneath. The front of the pool Is outlined In massive white, marble, seml-clreular In shape, bearing the words, "A Gift From Sorosls”—cut from marble. Between the pillars that rise from the rostrum to the organ loft are placed beautiful white marble vases of classic design. On either side of the rostrum near great whits marble pillars, which seem to stand guard over the beautiful baptistry. Is a splendid marble vase Several feet In height. So delicate In carving, oo graceful In design, and so perfect In proportions, the baptistry suggests the entrance to palaces of the old world built whhn the genius of ancient artists contrib uted to the architectural beauty of roy al habitations. This poem In white marble Is the magnificent donation from the Sorosls Society of the First Baptist church, a band of energetic women, whoee love and labor! have found expression In one of the most elegant. gifts ever made a Southern church. Thle lovely work of art will In silent splendor stand for generations os a fitting representation of the faith ful service of women who loved their Lord, and, loving Him, desire to honor Him' as becomes a King and a Matter. formal parties given In Decatur this Both Mlaa West and Miss Hill wore becoming lingerie gowns and were as slated In the entertainment of their guest* by Mrs. It.
