Another battle In the liquor campaign
as waged at the meeting of the coun
cil police committee Friday afternoon
hen a number of prominent ministers
combatted every inch of ground In the
renewal of liquor licenses. In the In
stance of Gnnn & Gaurax saloon on
Simpson street there was a drawn but
tle and at the request of Dr. L G.
Broughton the fight will be again taken
up Monday, when the police committee
will hold special session at 10 o'clock
In the morning.
The saloon men were, out In numbers.
The ministers of Atlanta were repre
sented by Dr. Broughton and Dr. A
Ward.
The committee unanimously voted
adversely on license for Dan Pappa to
oj>en a beer aaloon at 34 Elliott street,
and Patrick Lyons to open n saloon nt
115 West Mitchell street. The decision
was reached after the opposing factions
had each been heard in ardent argu
ment.
Dr. Ward, the first speaker, declared
that the people living In the neighbor
hood were opposed to the saloons. IL
then read resolutions adopted by three
churches, all protesting against them.
Attorney R. B. Ilinckburn, represent
Ing Dan Pappa, baaed his argument
along the line that In certain limits
saloons were allowed and that 24 Elliott
street was In these limits.
Marietta Saloonists Win.
The saloon men won a victory ea to
saloons on Marietta, street All licenses
aakyd for that thoroughfare were
granted. Irrespective of the petition
signed by 200 citlxcns and presented by

Aside from the saloon at the comer
of Mitchell and Broad streets, all the
licenses will bo reported favorably on
Weat Mitchell street between Whitehall
and the terminal station. These were

stated that he was In favor of grant
ing tho licenses with tho exception of

of that run by L. H. Story, at the cor
ner of East Mitchell street and Cen
