DEPLORABLE SHORTAGE IN DIRECTORY MARKET You Can’t Get a 1906 Name Book For Love or Money-Growth of City the Cause. There la a shortage In the Atlanta city directory market. You can't get one for love nor money. There has been none on the market since the tint of March. J. W. Hill, who gets out the directory, has been advertising In the papers regularly for three months In an alfort to buy coplaa from those who bare subscribed and possi bly do not need tham a* much' i* thay litst thought they did. He can't get them, however, even by offering the original purchase prlca, plus a liberal premium. The shortage Is due to the gnat growth of Atlanta, aaya Manager Hill, who was Importuned Wednesday by a representative of The Georgian, who had orden to get another directory. "I had a greater subscription list for the 1906 directory than ever before," he aald, "but printed an extra 160 coulee any way. Herbert Dlltler, Atlanta's yuung and gifted vlollnst, made hla first public appaarance at tha Bijou Tuesday even ing. By 6:10 o'clock th* theater waa nearly filled with an audience of aev- era! hundred people—many of them who felt In th* young nrtlat a warm personal Interest, who would never have dreamed of being critical, how ever meager the performance; and numbers, on the other hand, who were curious lo ascertain for themselves whether Herbert Dlttler really poa- aessea the genius accredited lo him. When the youth came upon the stage hla personality Immediately won Ihe sympathy and Intareat of Ilia audience, and surprised those who had never seen him. It I* evident at a glance that he posaeaeea both genius and tem perament. Th* slenderness of hie fig ure gives the Impression of exceeding frailty. Th* atnaftlve far* which re- Herts every passing emotion,* the won derful eyes, dark aa If with aome an cient tragody, and th* penalv* mel ancholy of Ms expression belong lo the arttet who forever commute with “the thing* which are unseen." Th* hand*, long, sensitive, deft, are those of a maestro. A personality which makes Its appeal, and a magnetism which compels response, even before th* bow ts drawn across th* strings! Difficult' Program, The program rendered by Herbert Dlttler would have taxed the power* of any virtuoso, but It la not too much to say that to each number he anve an Interpratatlon which was not only soul ful, but highly Intelligent and dignified, When he began Ihe Vleustemp*. there beating a nervousness th* effect of an attrartlv* ence. but thla disappeared lb* violinist lost himself ' Ills Audition of was masterly. To It he brought ease and correctnaas of technique, aa well as sympathy and sentiment. The treatment of Handel's “Honatn A Major- was broad and dignified. Th* "Ralade *1 Polonaise." by Vleuxtempa, waa well Interpreted and was present ed with facile execution. Dvorak's Humoreak*'' waa particularly aultad to Dlttler and he rendered It so that non* of Us exquisite daintiness was lost upon hla hearers. In this composi tion a whimsical humor altarnatao with passages of deepest pathos, and while ita technique Is not noticeably brilliant It la by no means easy to present Its j contrasting them** so aympathtlcally as did Dlttler. The "Dana* Tstgans" has all the swing and fire characteristic of the Hungarian gypsy. This number waa notable for th* clearness and cor rectness of Its harmonies. Th* Intonation of Ihe performer It excellent throughout. Ills technique,! la consideration of hts extreme youth— l he I* only 16 years of age—is wonder-1 fuL and Is BO free from faults that th* 1 rear* of study before him mav be spent 1 In developing end not correcting HI* ' broad tone* are full of rotor, and he. never abuse* th* use of vibrato. i i Ho much for th* terhalcat aid* of , Herbert Putter's work. Ae line aa It Is, I It would scarcely Justify our bestowing upon him Ihe high nsme of genius, were his technical ability not accom panied by something finer. It Is In hi* rich temperament and In the aoul of Ilia music that power lira. The qual ity nl hi* work Is essentially feminine, ae tha music of Llsat, for Instance, waa essentially masculine. His range as yet hA non* of the terrible power which made people wonder whether Paganini's genius were angel nr devil, which seemed lo prove Ole Hull's kin ship with the great elementa of nature, thunder and lightning and rain, or which made Joachim the mualcal giant of the nineteenth century. Hla play ing la marked rather by n subtlety, a rare aplrltuallty, and by auch piercing aweetness, surely, as caused the rocka and trees iff high Olympus to follow Orpheus' lute. The expediency of Her bert Dlttter'a entering upon yeara of atudy abroad inuat be decided on the ground of temperament, rather than of technical fitness. Those who heard him know that he has th* tempera ment .and that a great career await* him. Atlanta should rally to hla sup port. for he will one day come back t* u* with the wreath of laurel. Axisted by Kuhrt Mueller, Mr. Dlttler wee ably assisted by Kuhrt Mueller. Mr. Mueller rendered some solos on the piano, each of which waa enthusiastically received. In the rendition of Llast's Hungarian Raspho- dy hla technical work waa especially brilliant.
