Mississippi sxchsnge of the celebra
tion of the golden wedding of Hon. and
Mrs. W. T. Ratliff, which occurred a
few day* ago at Raymond. Mia*., wilt
be read with much Interest by their
friends and the friends of their daugh
ter, and son-in-law. Dr. and Mrs. B.
D. Gray, of Atlanta, In various parts
of the South:
•Captain and Mrs. W. T. Ratliff
celebrated their golden wedding anni
versary Monday at their beautiful su
burban home at Raymond with a re
ception to tflelr friends, who came not
only from every section of the county,
but from many points In this and oth
er states.
“Fifty-two guests, relatives and In
timate friends, partook of an. elegant
dinner, served under a handsome water
oak which elands In the spacious yard.
This tree was planted by Mra. Ratliff
soon after moving to the place, thirty-
two years ago. All the afternoon the
friends from everywhere were enter
tained ss only the true Southerner can
entertain. Everything was dscorated
In golden colors. Including the tables,
at which delicious refreshments were
served.
“A pleasant feature of tha day was
a speech by Dr. W. T. Lowry, president
of Mississippi College at Clinton. In
presenting Captain RatlllL with a
handsome gold watch for the faculty
and a heavy gold chain for the senior
class of that Institution, Captain Rat
liff having been president of the
board of trustees for the last thirty-
three years. To this speech Captain
Ratllcff responded In an appropriate
vein In his usual happy way. Follow
ing this was an oration by Dr. B. D.
Gray, a Baptist divine of wide reputa
tion tn the South, living In Atlanta,
Ga.. he being a son-in-law of Captain
and Mra. Ratliff. Dr. Gray extolled
their character In terma that touched
the hearts of every one present.
“The presents were numerous, hand
some nnd costly, nnd Included, besides
tha watch nnd chain, five handsome
gold clock*. Ench guest was present
ed with n golden nasturtium, tied with
golden ribbon.
“Among the many presents was an
elegant after dinner set of cupe and
saucers from a Cincinnati friend of
Captain Ilatllff, who was In tbe fed
eral army and took part In the selge
of Vicksburg. He wrote on a little
card: ’I am extremely glad we did
not kill one another before Vicksburg.
Accept my congratulations, and a wish
that you and your good'wlfe jnay have
many bappy returns of the day.’ Dis
played among the presents was one of
the Invitations to the wedding, and
one of the satin slippers worn by tha
bride. Both of them were unlike any
thing seen these days and attracted
much attention.
“The celebration Included family re
union, at which all hut one of their
eight living children were present.
“Captain and Mrs. Ratlin were mar
ried at the home of the bride's par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Cook, near
Edwards, on June 18, 1868, the cere
mony having been performed by Rev.
James A. Godfrey, a noted Methodist
dtvlna of ante bellum days, nnd six
of those preaent at the wedding were
alto present at the celebration Mon
day.
“There la not, perhaps, a couple In
Mississippi more universally esteemed
for their purity of character and devo
tlnn to the best Ideals of life than Cap
tain and Mra Ratliff.”
