Special to The Georgian. Little Rock, Ark., June 26.—George Gilliland, one of the original dlscov erers of pearls In Black river, le now operating on White river below Clar. endon. When the discovery of pearls Black river was first made few under' stood the value of the gems and Gllll land was among this number. His flrst pearls were disposed of at a frac tion of their real worth. He averaged finding a good pearl every three days, nnd had sold quite a number, when he determined to try for higher prices on hti next lot. A few days after form ing this resolution he found a larger and prettier pearl than any he had ever taken out, so he sent It to the dealer with the statem,nt that he would take 61,150 for It, nnd felt that this was a very fancy price. The dealer very promply sent his check for 61,150. Later Gilliland saw the dealer and ha told film he sold the pearl to Tlf fany for 616,000. "But,” snld the deal er, “1 was as big a fool for selling it to Tiffany for 616,000 sa you were for selling It to me tor 61,150.” The dealer went to New York to make the sale, and felt that he had driven the bar gain of his life when he unloaded his pearl on Tlltany for 616,000, but hadn't gotten out of New York before he rend In a paper where Tiffany had sold that identical pearl for 646,000. It la said to be, nnd still ranks, as the finest fresh water pearl ever dlscov' ered. » Soon after this transaction Gilliland quit hunting for pearls himself and went to buying from others. In three months he had made 67,000, and had the money In a bank. This money, he thought ample to satisfy his needs, and he abandoned his elfotts to accumulate and went to spending with rather a lavish hand, for In a few months his 67.000 was gone. He Is now digging shells In White river. He hasn't quite as much money os he had when at the height ot his success as a pearl buyec. hut he has made something near 61.000 since Jan uary selling pearls.
