WHITE PA YS WA GES OF SIN
WITH HIS OWN LIFE'S BLOOD
AFTER CAREER OF REVELSl
Studio in Tower of Madison Square Garden,]
Overlooking Spot Where He Was Slain,
Often the Scene of Midnight Orgies.
• By CHARLES 80MERVILLE.
By Private Leased Wire.
New York, June 28.—Death ending any man's life can never be a more
terrible figure than aa It stands now at the coffin of Stanford White.
It la not only the manner In which 'It came upon him, although that
waa very terrible; a man of large renown ahot down aa an unclean crea
ture, kicking hla legs grotesquely under a wine-stained table, blood spots
on his white ehlrt front, clutching with wild hands at hla throat with
heavy, whitening face upturned In the glare of a thousand lights, to show
hundreds of strangers' eyes his death agony, while for his dirge there was
the bitter tinkle of silly music.
LIGHT ON THE 8ECRET WAY8 O’ LIFE.
It was not only the manner that death cams to him, but avan more
terrible la the aapect It haa since assumed. It haa taken a torch with a
relentless light Into the secret ways of the life of this man of fam*. It
haa turned him Infamous. Its gaunt fingers have stripped his bier of the
laurels that his genlua won and draws oyer his while, dead face a cloak of
obllquy.
Madison Square Garden—the greatest monument of his high talents—
has been disclosed as his den of eln and ahame, even as It was here In the
great building that hla genius had wrought death struck him down as he
sat with his bleared eyes conning the aupple, lithe young dancers of ths
chorus—so like so many other choruses out of which he had, with his
wealth, his distinction, his subtleties born of keen knowledge of the world,
lured to hla aldo with villainous Intent eo many foolteh young creatures.
NONE EXEMPT FROM SCANDAL-TIPPED TONGUE.
And even among men of easy mode of life. In which a code of morals
has no real place—even among this sort, death puts Stanford White In
contempt, If among them he was not In contempt before. For year In and
year out he had wielded a scandal-tipped tongue against his very victims.
He had no remorse, and he had no pity. They might go away from him,
very young and very shame-stricken, trying to atari life anew.
They might advance to first places In the theatrical world. They
might strive hard with honest ambitions and win. Or some decent fel
low might lead one of them to the altar. He did not waffelt such careen
silently. Over the cafe or club tables It was his sport- to move hla sneer
ing, heavy lips In recounting the past, and hla tongue never faltered when It
reached the mention of a woman's name. And If he ever kept silence,
he used such silence aa a whip to laah at will some wretched young creature
back Into hla vicious slavery.
HE HAD WON GREAT FAME AND 8UCCE88.
To those only who knew hi* greatneas, he was a fine, splendid figure—
a man of fame and success In the ripeness of years—Stanford White, ion
of a celebrated Journalist; brilliant In hla architectural studies at the Uni
veralty of New York, and In his travels through France and Italy, the tal
ented pupil’ of Htchardion, whom he surpassed; the moat artistic member
of the great firm of McKim, Mead A White, the dealgner of the Imposing
Madison Square Garden, the lofty, almple Waahlngton arch, -and many other
noted buildings.
And' again, fortunate Stanford White, hla wife, a stately handiome worn'
an, formerly a Mlsa Elisabeth Smith, of Smlthtown, Long Ialhnd, and an
heiress; hla son, a sturdy young fellow at college; and again, prominent
Stanford White, with his name on the roster of the best clubs of the city,
and his name' always on the Invitation lists of great banquets and othar
functions.
In an amazing manner, he successfully lived hla life of fine labor, and
Hla life of Iniquity. Promptly at 9 o'clock every morning he waa at hie or
flee. He worked easily, yet vigorously and thoroughly. Then he rolled In
hla carriage or his automobile—seldom to his home—almost Invariably to the
haunts whither his viciousness dragged him. His strong body and brain
paid the enormous tax without weakening.
\l>- HAD A STUDIO IN HIGH TOWER.
The first night found him present In a theater In correct attire, the
leader of a group of wealthy men who are pleased to be termed bon vl
vants. From the front of the house he went bock to the wing*. No
manager blocked hla way to securing Introductions to auch pretty women
as hla eye fell keenly upon. The more youthful oge might be, the keener
waa his glanca.
With hla wealth, hla Influence In theatrical circles, hla lavish gifts, hla
masterful Intellect and magnetic manner, the luxurious allurements of hla
magnificent studio In Madison Square Garden, the man wad temptation In
carnate.
High In the tower was hla studio. It waa safely to be used for any
evil purpose. He was a director of the building. Hla word to any subordi
nate was law. He brought poor young creature* there—gtrla recruited
from the humble homes of the city, and aaw them bewildered In the big
square room with Its soft red llghta, Its beautiful pictures In glinting,
heavy golden frames; Ita marvels of tapestries and rug*, Its silk-draped
lounging spot*. Ita wine-stocked buffet. In a part of It he had a cunningly
contrived set of mirrors that showad hla visitors from every point of view.
Far above the city, far from the reach of Its noise, beyond sight and hear-
Ing, White had his den.
WOMAN BELABORED HIM WITH AN UMBRELLA.
Sometimes he took crowds thare. There they held orgies. White and
such men as he drew around him In the diversion* he Invented, had a club
In Twenty-eighth street. It waa called the "Chorua Girls' Club."
Yet all ths time White had gone unscathed up to a week ago. It was
at night. In front of the New York theater. White, with hla high hat,
crushed down, hla claw-hammer tall* flying, aped away to aacap* a woman
who belabored him with an umbrella—a woman scalded by hi* freely ut
tered scandal.
Beautiful Evelyn Neablt Thaw came to New York a few days ago with
her young husband. White laughed knowingly to hla cronlaa. They re
membered the affair whan Evelyn Neablt waa a little girl among tha studios
of New York; of whan aha appeared In the choruses; of Whlta's Interest
In her.
And White sneered at the maddened young husband who came to him.
And he sneered at ths threats that tha erased and desperate young follow
uttered. He plied the young jr°d» n with letters that mad* her shudder.
Then tbe tragedy.
