The fleet thlrly-Twit lots nten- ttoned-ln'th* catalogue are all connect ed with the American war of Independ ence and more particularly with the | Marquis de lAfa.valte, John tjulncy Adams. Henry Clay, Andrew' Jackson, Thomas Jefferson. James Madison. George Washington and James Mon roe. From tha artistic point of view the chief feature of the sale will Is- the lltr-slse bust of George Washington by K. L. J. Pitun executed In statuary marble. Washington Is represented In u military tunic draped with a cloak. On the base Is the Inscription: "Ne quid detriment! rapist res publics." Resides this there Is a monumental vase of silver gilt made by Franron- nlrr and presented by the people of France. In tile to the Marquis. Lafay ette. it is worthy of note.that this gigantic vase, which Is more remark- story of the founding of the or der la most entertainingly told, and to women wearying of the monotony of a llfci of luxury and pleasure-seeking. It may give some valuable hints. The order sprang out of a luncheon club organised by four prominent leaders In Atlanta aoclety, who had been schoolmates and close friends during tbelr girlhoods, and whose Intimacy continued after their marriages. Each succeeding hostess of the club tried to outdo her predecessor In the elegance of her entertaining, until Anally aome of the most far-seeing of the members bgan to perceive that the purpose of their meetings waa fast being loat In a spirit of formality. At the last of these formal lunch eons, which had been moat elaborate and elegant, a awlft decision waa made to abandon auch entertainment* and Instead to organise a charitable dub, where the purpose of enjoyment should not be considered, but whose object should b* doing something for others. . • ■' The happiness’ these young women have obtained In their service for nth- ‘era haa been Incalculable, and they have aided hundreds of unfortunates. They tint met weekly like the old fashioned women they claimed to be, for plain aewlng for the poor and In mates of hospitals, and later they be came ambltloua to do something per manent for their special work. The result of this Is a splendidly equipped ward In the Orady hospital In Atlanta, built and furnished en tirely through the efforts of ths de voted hsnd of women. In November, 1*17, the work of raising funds for the ward waa launched by a brilliant entertainment at the Grand opera house In Atlanta, and on May 7. 1101, th* corner alone waa laid with much cere mony. Today the ward, titled up with every convenience, la a boon to the city where It Is located. It cost over 110,000, and the women w-ho made this money, who flret Inaugurated their charity work In auctl a small way,' proved their business enterprise, read of th* methods In which they raised the money for the ward Is moat Interesting. Besides two great extrav- ognntas, a large childrens party waa given. Another method was a aal* of old mahogany Just at the right mo ment when the popular taste waa key ed to an appreciation qf antique fur niture. On nnother occasion they had charge of a large dry goods store In Atlanta for one day, and received per cent of the sale. In giving baaaara they most excel, and of this depart ment of the work Mre. Horton says very cleverly: “Now, there waa 8*nt|tnsntal Tom my. After b* missed the prise In the composition contest even Elspeth lost faith In him. •• 'Tommy,' she said, ruefully, 'you never will 'mount to nothing.' "'Yea, I will, Elspeth,' said Tommy, the redoubtable. 'If I could Just And something t liked to do.* “This speech, so clearly from the heart, embodies the secret of moat hu man ■deceases. In ths giving of ba sears the members of ths order found something they liked' to do.' Their big exlravogansas were greater money maker*: but In point of artistic merit the basaara had every advantage. The ten are great travelers, and aa fash ionable women In touch with new Ideas, all of. which an mill, their appreciation not less than their Inventive ability and executive talent. Any thing once seen by them esn be repro duced. My dividing up the basaar work each member did the thing she liked to do. One of the ten Is a won derful designer of baby caps. An other has a gift for dressing dolls and has dressed thousands of them. 8IIII another has a genius—It ran be railed nothing lees—for pincushions; an other for lampshades. One member of llie order Is. It .la said, gifted above all other*. ‘ She ran do anything and do It perfectly. Another would- have made her fortune as a merchant. She has the knack of picking up smart tri fles of every description. which eel I to enormous advantage. - "These batnnra, which are held by the order every rtiriatma*. have be come .annual social features unttrl- Value in Presents. The beat business principle—Oat which caters to the demand lor- value —Is our principle, and It’a a telling one at this time of wedding present*.
