Lamar Camp, U. C. V., at a meeting
yesterday decided to serve refresh
ments at the next meeting of the camp.
This camp recently erected a monu
ment to the Confederate dead, and

Green grabbed the chewed ear In his
handkerchief and boarding a trolley

THEJHOMINATION
In accordance with a resolution
passed by the Democratic executive
committee of the Fifth congressional
district the first of last April, the
Democratic congressional convention
for the Fifth congressional district has
been called to meet for ratifying the
nomination of L. F. Livingston. The
convention will be held next Saturday
at 12 o'clock in the Kllnball house.
Aside from ratifying the nomination,
the convention will formulate the plat-
form and elect the executive commit
tee for the two ensuing years.

EOR MISSING BOY
The police have been asked to find
Len Henderson, 12 years of age, of 102
Lovejoy street, who has been missing
from his home since Tuesday.
The parents of the boy have no Idea
what has become of him and are very
uneasy. A description of the missing
lad had been furnished the police.

SLEUTHS FIND CLEW
TO
DETECTIVES BELIEVE THEY WILL
SOON OBTAIN EVIDENCE TO
WARRANT AN ARREST.
It was learned Saturday morning
that detectives have unearthed a
strong clew In the case of the Incen
diary Are Thursday night In the de
partment store of C. G. Hannah, In
Windsor street, and they believe they
have struck the trail of the firebug.
Detectives Lockhart and T. B. Lan-
ford, who are trying to ferret the mys
tery, expect material devolpments
within the next twenty-four hours. Tht
sleuths believe they will ,oon have
sufficient evidence In hand to warrant
nn arrest. As yet, however, they say
they have only strong suspicions

Frank Hester, the negro who was
mysteriously shot early Wednesday
morning In a basement at Walton and
Bartow streets, died Saturday morn
ing In thi Grady hospital.
• Toombs Hightower, another negro,
has been arrested by Policemen Cov
ington and Mlxe, suspected, of doing
the shooting. Hs denies he Is guilty.
He will be given a preliminary exami
nation Tuesday morning before Re
corder Broyles.

Albany Sleeper Almost Entirely
Reserved by Candidates’
Friends.
A number of Atlantans will leave on
Sunday night for Albany to be present
at the debate between Hoke Smith
and Clark Howell, which will take place
In the Chautauqua auditorium at noon
Monday. Bhrery lower berth In the Al
bany sleeper was engaged Saturday-
morning and several upper berths had
been reserved. It Is expected that many
others will make reservations and that
each candidate will have a representa
tive number of friends from his homo
city.
Itules for the debate have been form
ulated by the Joint committee ut Al
bany. The Hon. II. M. McIntosh, chair
man of the Dougherty county Demo
cratic executive committee, will pre
side. A. P. Vason will Introduce Mr.
Smith and Judge D. F. Crosland will
8 resent Mr. Howell to tho audience. Mr.
mlth will speak for an hour, to be fol
lowed by Mr. Howell for an hour and a
half, with a half hour rejoinder by
Mr. Smith. No questions will be per
mitted and each candidate will be
equally represented on the platform.
The auditorium will provide seats for
4,000 persons.
After hearing the evidence Saturday
morning In regard to the bloody fight
between women Friday at the Fulton
Bag and Cotton Mills, Recorder Broyles
fined Ola Thompson, a white woman,
$5.72, Lula Morris, another white wo
man, $1,75, and dismissed the case of
the negro woman, Henrietta Riddle.
It was shown that tho Thompson wo
man and the negro had a dispute about
the closing of a door and that later the
two white women attacked the negro
with sticks. The Riddle woman de
fended herself with another stick, and,
as a result, both she snd the Thomp
son woman had to be given attention
at the Grady hospital. The cases were
made by Special Officer Reese, of the
mill, and Pollc
Policeman Dood.
TRREATENS MATRON
Mrs. B. Karwlsh. wife of a merchant
at Marietta and Pine afreets, created
a lively scene In the matron's ward at
the police station Friday night about
midnight by violently abusing Miss
Sanderson, the matron, and threaten
ing to do her bodily Injury.
_ Had It not been for the fact that
Mrs. Karwlsh was locked In a cell, It la’
believed she would have attacked Miss
Sanderson. Although she could not get
to the matron, she declared she would
"fix” her, and made the night hideous
with abuse and by slamming the Iron
bunk In the cell.
Mrs. Karwlsh was arrested by Po
liceman Arrowoow and Wylie and Is
declared to be crazy. It Is under
stood efforts will be made to place her
In a private sanitarium.

Chicago today. For years he has elud

He has been Imprisoned twice, break-

Cal., and Jumping his bond the second
time In Washington. Scotland Yard
and the pollc sof Paris have both been
offered rewords by their governments
for his capture.
ANOTHER STATE BANK
EXAMINER IS NEEDED
Ollbert Pearson, of Oreensboro, N.
, secretary and treasurer of the Na-
onal Audubon Society, Is spending
some days In Atlanta In the Interest
of the bill Introduced by Senator
Wheatley to Incorporate the Audubon
Society of Georgia.
Mr. Pearson is deeply Interested m
the work of the society, and Is work
ing hard to secure legislation all over
the country for the protection and
reservation of song and Insectlverous
Irds. The art Introduced fur this state
Is formulated along that of the one In
North Carolina, considered a model by
bird lovers.
It Is more than probable that Mr.
Pearson will make >n address to the
house and senate during the coming
week. If th- time can be properly ar
ranged.
Representative Martin Calvin will In
troduce In the house next week a bill
authorizing the itate treasurer to ap
point an aaslstant Inspector of state
banks.
Treasurer Park Is now examiner of
state bonks. When he woe named for
the place Georgia had only about 150
banks. The number tuts Increased to
$17, with new ones springing up every
day. The work has grown so heavy
that Captain Park has hard work In
keeping up with It, together with his
other duties.
The State Bankers' Association
unanimously Indorsed the Idea of ap
pointing an additional examiner. If
the apt la pasaed the treasurer will
have the power to name the assistant,
and to fix his salary.
Large Cotton Deal Mads.

Columbus, Ga., July 7.—Well Bros.,
of Montgomery, yesterday bought
nearly 2,000 boles of cotton from
Blanchsrd, Humber ft Co, the Colum
bus warehouse firm. This Is the largest
sale of cotton that has been made In
Columbus this season.

WIFE WITH HAMMER

Chattanooga, Tenn., July 7.—Sam
Jones, a negro, has been arrested here,
charged with the murder of his wife
at Gadsden, Ala., the crime having been
committed with a hammer. An officer
picked him up and claimed the reward
of $60. The crime was committed on
July 4, 1905. He has been returned to
Gadsden.

Savannah, Go., July 7.—At-a moot
ing of the Georgia State League direc
tors held here this afternoon It was
deoldsd to.continue the league with
four clubs until August 4, tho close of
the season.
The clubs will be Cordele, Albany,
Waycross and Brunswick.
The meeting was presided over by
acting president J. M. Cog, of Way-
croas. Colonel J. W, Walters, of Al
bany; J. W. Bavaresse, of Brunswick
and ez-Presldsnt J. W. Thomas, of
Savannah, were present as directors,
with one or two gentleman who are
taking an Interest in the league.
Tho four teams In the league will
contlnuo as at present constituted.
The four directors have come to the
fescue of the league when Its future
looked dark, and by assuming the
financial end have Insured the con
tinuation of ball playing.
The league has already cost Its sup
porters a goodly sum of money, two
of the teams having succumbed to the
stress.

Blmma, an old and respected negro
woman of this place, waa drowned on
July 4 while fishing. She fell In the
melt, which waa only about five Inchee
deep, but falling on her face, she coon
drowned.
