'rnwmmmm '• "HP THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN. nil UnAV. H i.\ m. la By REV. E. D. ELLEN WOOD, PASTOR UNIVERSAUST CHURCH W HAT a world of power, what n| wealth of meaning It contained ' in th!« simple monosyllable! Into It are crowded all the golden re- fU l[« of that portion of our lives called hm i,r y along with true education gained often by those severe lemma conned In tear* and bitter disappointment. l.ock- od »Ithln ll» treasure store rert secure the realisation of the future's eager antliipatlons. No word In all our lan guage conveys to us so much, did we but properly realise It. The consum mation of the wondrous dreams of the nrophet, the answer to the aspirations if the Idealist, the rebirth of long dead hope* but, more than all else. It an nounces to us the arrival of opportu nity- .•The present, the present. Is all that thou hast for thy soul's sure possessing: Like the patriarch’s angel, hold It fast Till It yield to thee Its blessing." Would that we might heed this splen did advice of the poet, and wrest from the rapidly fleeting present the bless- ines actually non to us by all the ex periences of life. The chief causo for the failure of so many lives to realize and appropriate nil that the preclousjlvlng present of fers with eager, outstretched hands. Is that so very many men and women are ,,, completely absorbed and engrossed In the other two of the three sections mm which they have divided their lives In their thinking and In their tmaglnatlona. They live so persistent ly In the memories of the past that the present and Its possibilities holds but Utile value In their eyes. They build so gloriously In their Imaginations and their speculation the chambered castles of the future that the dependable foun dation stones of n future, unmarred by regret, lie unhewn In the watting quar ries of the present. • The teaching-of those to whom the people of Ood are won! to look for their spiritual Instruction la not alwaya con- REV. E. D. ELLENWOOD. duclve to the moat wholeaonfe occupa tion nnd enjoyment of the golden hours of the preaenL Between the mournful walling for the tranamltted degeneracy of long forgotten ancestors, and the gloomy contemplation of the future’s endless woe, but little time Is left for Instruction In the profitable employment of that which le called to day, save the frequently reiterated command that It be spent In a feverish attempt to "flee from the wrath to come. 1 Too long have men been taught that the present life Is an evil to be endured with as much fortitude as may be commanded, instead of . Its being a priceless blessing to be (pent In the enjoyment of such genuine happiness as shall render acceptable gratitude for Its possession. There Is an old song much prlted by certain nntlclpa tory Christians which reads: "I'm but a stranger here, heaven I* my home." It Is a beautiful song, no doubt: speak ing -of high hope and splendid trust, but I never hear tt without thinking that those who sing It with such unc tlon might possibly And themselves aot lr tbsy would only so far from home spend a little more time and thought In an attempt to realise in the place of their Impatient sojourn the beautiful dreams of the unseen ami unknown homeland. At any rate. I think we would all be happier If a good many of these people would take out naturali sation papers. 'Cet rid of your regrets: Ilfs Is made up of experiences, and all experiences *5#, therefore, valuable—the hard ones most of all." Thia Is good advice, but may I be so bold as to say that I think this Is still better: Los* your regrets In a constant effort to prevent their re production. The past Is gone. We can not have It again. Well, who wants It? We have something Infinitely better. We have today. "Every day Is a fresh beginning, every morn It a world made new. Te who are weary of sorrow and sinning, here is a beautiful thought for you." It rained all the afternoon yes terday, perhaps, and the king of day sank to his rest covered by a somber pall of cloud. Well, what of It? Mis coming, today, was hsraidsd by a mer- nd the rosy flush of a glad surprise o'erspread the heavens at his approach, and now in triumph once more he makes his march across the aky. It Is today. Yesterday things went wrong all day. you say. One disappointment followed another with disheartening certainty, and the evening found ydu weary and-empty of hope. Tes, It was surely too bad, but—that was yester day. and It Is gone forever. Today Is here. It ram* stealing quietly Into your chamber while still In your trou bled dreams you mourned over yester day's lack of triumph. Today Is here. What are you going to do with It? "It’s up to you."
