JULY 14. ~ jr 9 NEWS OF THE SECRET ORDER WORLD L MASONS OF CHATTOOGA HAD SPLENDID CONVENTION Public Exercises Were Held Thursday, at Which Prominent Members of the Order Made Speeches. Edited By CLAUDE NEALY Th* Muonic convention of Chattooga county *u held on Wednesday and Thursday of this week at Summer ville, and was a pronounced success In every respect. A large number of Masons were present from all sections of the coun ty. The session of Wednesday Mu devoted largely to the transaction of business, many matters of Importance to the members of the order being con sidered. Public exercises were held Thursday In the county court house, the spacious building being'crowded with Masons and their friends. An address of wel come was delivered by Mayor Jesse Jolly, of Summer*Ue, and the response was made by Judge John W. Maddox, mayor of Rome. Other speeches were made by Hon. B. F. Thurmond, of Lafayette: Orand Master Max Meyerhardt. of Rome; Grand Junior Warden George M. Na- S ler, of Monroe, and Deputy Grand laster Thomas II. Jeffries, of Atlanta. The speeches were all splendid of- forts and were received In hearty man ner by the Interested auditors. A big barbecue was served In the coort house yard,,which was one of the features of the occulon. Large numbers of ladles were present at the ’cue. Thursday afternoon, the third degree was conferred by grand lodge officers. Captain Cleghorn, one of the best known men In that section, vfts mar shal of the day', and handled the pro ceedings In excellent style. MACCABEES TO HAVE FINE JASS BAND Member* of LaPayette Tent Form ing Band for Open-Air Con cert* and Other Occasions. The members of Lafayette tent of the Maccabeea are organising a Maccabee band. Several well-known musicians have already expressed their willingness to join, and at the last review of this tent a committee, consisting of T. J. Miller, C. C. Head, J. H. Head, J. J. Brown sad H. H. Butler, waa appointed to perfect arrangements looking to Its early organisation. The Maccabeea have nearly 100 bands throughout this country and Canada, being especially strong In the Northwest, where almost every little hamlet that has a Maccabee tent has i Maccabee band also. As Lafayette tent bos so many mu sicians, It will not be long, until the people In the vicinity of their hall will be treated to open air concerts. NEW K. OF P. LODGE AT CRAWFORDVILLE, QA. On Tuesday night a new lodgo of Knights of Pythias waa Instituted at Crawfordvllle. The work of Institution was in charge of the lodge from Wash ington. Quite a number of Knights from Greensboro and other places were In attendance. The following officera were elected for tha new lodge: Chancellor Commander — Hawea Cloud. Vice Chancellor—J. A. City Attorney James L. May- son, past grand sachem of Georgia, L O. R. M.; Chaplain Ward,' who ts the popular pastor of Temple Baptist church; Deputy State President E. L. Humphreys; Psst President J. E. Eu banks, and a first-class mimic and par ody singer, Mr. Bailey, of the Southern Saw Works, who between speeches came near breaking uir the meeting by his fun-making abilities. President Williams presided and In' trodured the speakers after he had eg' plained the object of the meeting. The entertainment committee was: Bro. W. C. Bennett, chairman; Secre tary John E. White arid Official Pho tographer A. R. Adktnson. They work ed early and late for the success of the entertainment, which so far exceeded their most sanguine expectations that no doubt others wilt be held by them in the near future. J. W. MYSTIC SHRINE TO GIVE BARBECUE ON NEAT SATURDAY Yaraab Temple, Mystic Shrine, will give Its annual barbecue next Satur day at the Cold Springe ‘Cue Club ground* at East Point. Th* district convention of th* fifth Masonlo district will bs held In Mon roe August 16. This district embraces the Masonic lodges of Atlanta and It Is expected that a largo number of Masons will at tend from this city. Hon. Thomas H. Jeffries, of Atlanta, deputy grand master, ts prestdsnt of tho convention, and R. R. Fowler, of Covington, secretary. The committee on arrangements, headed by Junior Grand Warden George M. Napier, of Monroe, I* pre paring an elaborate program for th* occasion. $500.00. The above reward will bo paid for such evidence as will lead to arrest and conviction of the party or parties who maliciously cat a number of wires on cable polo at corner of Peachtree and Seventh streets, during Wednesday night, April 19, or Thursday morning, April 20. A like reward will be paid for such evidence os will lead to the arrest and conviction of any per son or persons maliciously inter fering with -or destroying the property of this company, at any point.
