Foreign markets ahowed decided Improvement in all branches. Consols and other Invest ment Issues were fractionally higher. A brisk atlvance occurred In South African mining shares on the favorable report of the Transvaal commission pointed to investigate the much agitat ed coolie labor question, and the list rose smartly. Our market, in addition to this turn for the better abroad, was helped by the gain of $4,600,000. with which the local banks started the week at the ■ub-treasury and the consequent easier tendency In money rates and by tbe impreslson which had sunk deep at the close of the week that the stock market was pretty well oversold. Following tho London quotations, the stock market opened Arm with the gen eral average of prices % to % above Saturday's final. Trading at the outset was fairly* active. Reading was the strongest stock, opening up a full point, though it lost half the gain. After the opening trading the market became dull, though the undertone held gener ally firm.
