The Misses Laude an In Fort Wayne,
GIRLS SHOULD LOOK A T
MATRIMONY WITH EYES
OF GOOD COMMON SENSE
By ARLETTA BURROUGHS.
The old adage, “Look before you
leap,” Is applicable nowhere more than
In marriage. The entmnce Into this
tftate should be contemplated In a moat
practical way. Too often youths and
maldena are so much In love with one
another that the serious side of the life
they Intend to enter never presents
Itself to either of them.
Love Is a divine thing. It la abso
lutely Indispensable to happiness either
single or married. But It la not every
thing. The necessity for bread and
butter, for Instance, haa a fashion of
Intruding Itself Into such combinations
In a way that Is sometimes startling.
If many silly boys and squally moon
struck girls were to devote as much
thought to the future as they do to
ward overcoming obstacles In the way
to the parson there would be fewer
foolish marriages,, to say nothing of
divorces.
Raven Theory Disproved.
Improvident youth seem* to have a
weak developed Idea at times that the
ravens ore welting around In Hocks to
provide food. It le Incredible that In
this practical every-day age so many
absolutely hopeleas cases shoiitd pre
sent themselves to the view of the
average dtlsen.
The happiest marriages are by no
means dependent on the possession of
a fortune. However, a man to be fair
to the girl he wishes to marry, to say
nothing of himself, should have In ao-
tual possession some way to make a
living for her. Many times a struggle
la good for the development of the
helpmeet when It comes unforeseen.
But to deliberately walk Into such a
light with actual want as stares In the
face the hastily married, penniless, job
less youth Is to court everything which
tends to breed misery.
The hopeleaanese of It all In the mar
riage of extreme youth l« that nine
times out of ten love, which le the only
thing that can possibly counteract pov
erty, proves In such cases to be only a
virulent attack of the “puppy" variety,
and soon develops Into a Condition to
be relieved only by tha divorce courts.
A Rtal Love Can Wait.
Girls, don't ever allow yourselves to
think of matrimony until you know
that a living Is assured you. If you
and your flance love each other you
will both be willing to wait. If either
can be swerved from allegiance to the
other It Is well to And It out.
There have been many happy mar
riages where both parties to the con
tract'have kept on In their same ca
pacity aa Wage earners, and Jointly
contributed to the home-moklng as
well as a growing bank account. Also,
men with small Incsmea have mar
ried and their wives have been perfect
ly happy because, love wae there. These
wives knew, however, whnt to expect,
and laid their plans accordingly.
Because a man does not want to
plunge Immediately Into matrimony la
no sign that he does not love you, girls.
If he asks you to postpone the wedding
until he Is welt on his feet, rest as
sured It Is because be dose love you
that he wishes to eave you from hard
ships. In older countries, yes, even
among savages, the future le well look
ed to by imrenta or other relatives of
both contracting parties before *the
Hnsl step Is taken. It le only In our
"land of the free" that the feeling of
Independence Is so frequently respon
sible tor the worst form of slavery
known.
Don’t Whine.
Other things than mgney should be
looked at In a logical manner. Has
the man of your choice an ungovern
able temper, whose exhibition at times
half amused you? Might this temper
develop with the years until life'would
be unbearable with It? If your pres'
ence does not hold It In check now,
how about "compatibility of tempei
later? Haa he Intemperate habit*? K
you have not been able to InHuence
him Into giving them up, think you
that It ran be accomplished after mar
riage? The answer to thla Is a great
big NO.
You will And it well .worth your
while to sit down and contemplate all
thee* and many other things earnestly
before you take such solemn vows a*
the marriage service demands. Then
It, with your eyes wide open, you
choose a booby prise. In the nuptial
lottery, stick to It, and don't go around
whining about It.

WHO SAID THE CAT?
To Faithful, But Erring Tom.
By LILLIE SMITH.
Come forth, you little downy chicks—
No more ■ big tom-cst to dread—
For he ho* gone whore good cats go;
He'll gobble you no more—he's dead.
A great and noble cat was he—
Of cat-ly ways and lordly mien.
HU mighty serenade* were grand.
Am can be proved by any man.
They'd make Beethoven bluah with
shame
As to MsrUh he sang (Tom. not Beet)
To think a cat on a big board fence
Could make him feel like thirty cent*. _
No mors old shoos or bricks will fell
As encore for hU mighty squall—
Peace to hU aahee, let him rest—
I’m sure he always did hla beat.
