Items of Interest.
Mrs. James A. Rounsavllle, of Rome,
was In Atlanta during the early part of
(hie week, en route to her home. She
has been at Atlantic Beach and stop
In Jacksonville for several day* w
there ahe was the gueat of honor at a
lunchon given by Mra. Edwin G. Weed.
Mrs. Rounsavllle was formerly presi
dent general of ths U. D. C, and state
regent for Georgia of the D. A. R. She
Is a very cultured and prominent wo
man. '
A great deal of Interest Is centered
In the meeting early In October of the
Woman's Club of Atlanta. Mrs. McD.
Wilson will then preside for the first
time since her election as president
of the organisation, and this meeting
la certain to be fitted with Interesting
events. Mra. Wilson Is one of the
most charming and highly cultured
women of the state, and her executive
ability Is almost unsurpassed, for she
has a thorough knowledge of many
subjects and, handles them with tact
and skill.
Miss Isma Dooly’s -article. In The
Constitution a few weeks ago, touch
ing upon the district school work, was
Interesting and well written.
The following Is a report In part of
tho Cass Station Model School:
Slnco my last yearly report we have
suffered the loss by tire of all our
school property. The lire occurred at
midnight April 27, 1905.
The next morning n number of jpei
pie gathered at tho site of the burned
buildings, not a plank of which was
left.
When I spoke of resuming school
(ono month of tbs session remaining)
severnl places In which to teach tver*
quickly offered. Two ladles, one a
patron, the other a friend. Instated that
a room In their homea be used.
A two-room cabin, near by, was
selected, however, tho pupils and teach
ers whitewashed It and put It In as
good order ns they could, and though
the difficulties seemed Insurmountable,
good work was done.
Now, after much hard work and
surmounting many Intrlcata difficulties,
more than could be told, an attractive
two-story building has been erected
and one much better suited to the
needs of the school.
On the flrst floor la the kitchen, shop,
assistant’s room, cloak room and halls.
The main school room, which Is to
be upstairs. Is Incomplete, as 8160
Is .needed to finish it. For the present
the shop Is used for a school room
and most of the manual training work
la done In a side hall.
The coet of the building complete
will be 22,000.
The attendance la better than ever
before. The leasona In hablta of In
dustry, neatness, promptness nnd value
of time, Is bearing good fruit.
Most of the pupils are deeply Inter
ested and are doing fine work. They
have helped greatly In making tables,
benches, shelves and putting up and
framing blackboards and pictures, etc.
They will have their usual school gar
den, and will enter the atate cotton
and corn contest; nlsn for the medal
and prlae offered by Ihe Georgia di
vision, United Daughters of the Con
federacy, snd are much Interested In
each.
In a recant county oratorical conleat
one of the younger puplla won the
medal. The puplla ksep Ihe build
and grounds In excellent condition.
In each room la a motto, and they
are: "Everything Depends Upon the
Beginning.” "Anything Worth Doing
at all Is Worth Doing Well." "We Musi
Not be Content Until We Have Done
Our Beak"
The elub women know so well what
constitutes a modal school and whnt
Is dons In one, that It Is unnecessary
to repeat.
The teachers, Mias Smith, Mrs. Clark
and Miss Foute, keep In cloee touch
with each other, the children and their
homes, and are doing remarkably good
work.
We need and must have for school
nnd Sunday school purposes a piano,
and we only have 810 on ths piano
fund; yet we feel that In some way our
need will be eupplled.
Massachusetts Federation. In the
most generous manner, continues to
support entirely the Industrial deoart-
tnent. Ths results of the work are
manifold and truly gratifying.
One ran hardly enter a home In tho
neighborhood (and the work Is nit
confined to our own neighborhood)
without observing many and various
articles, both useful and ornamental,
made by the pupils, nnd they teach
others, so the work Is continuous.
From The Columbus Enquirer-Sun.
All the women, club women and oth
erwise, are rejoicing over the near pros
pect of a child labor bill, and especially
a child labor bill which Includes
nn educational clause. People are wak
ing up to the fact that Illiteracy In
Georgia la largely among the whites.
And not only that, but the eagemeaa of
negroes for education and the Indiffer
ence on the subject that obtains with
the laboring class of white people tends
to make the situation worn*. Not that
w# object to negro education. Wo are
In favor of a common school education

the best labor thb world over. Educa
tion civilises, snd Who Is more Inter
ested In civilising the blacks than we
Southern people? Of courts, much of
the negro education Is a farce; merely
the monkey Imitation of knowledge
and not knowledge Itself. But this Is
s manifestation of the peculiar weak
ness for superficiality which Is a char
acteristic of the race as It has been
known In the past. We believe that
sane and solid education will cure this
to a great extent, and Is curing It. In
spit* of the absurd Incongruities any
•f us could easily quota, ths whole
body of ths race Is surely rising Just In
proportion to the real knowledge It at
tains.
All this Is right enough, but the trou
ble Is that he laboring class of whites
Is not Improving In proportion. They
do not wish It for their children. Mill
hands from father to son, they think
there Is no need of books or education.
When skilled labor la required, hands
schooling for forty ysars. They h%ve
not noticed this, but have gone on
pushing their children In the mills as
