Judge Towner. This Cummin# man
will put his motion to substitute, If
Chairman Spence refuses to do It, and
there will be a bowl of aye*, a whoop
of noes. The Cumprins man will de
clare the motion carried. Chairman
Spence will declare It lost and Judge
Towner will come forward and take
the gavel from the hand of State
Chairman Spence. The Cummlna choice
will come up and receive a mallet from
the hand of the man who has declared
him elected, and away they go—two
chairmen, two conventions, two pro
grams, with two tickets and two plat
forms, plainly In sight at the end of
the vista of a 24-hour fight In continu
ous session.
At some point or other the order will
be given by one faction or the other, to
"clear the hall” and that will mean only
a physical contest for possession of the
ring.

Chicago, July 20.—John L. Voss has
been arrested and Is being held pend
ing the result of the coroner's Inquest
following the finding of the body of
the man’s wife. Mrs. Ernestine Voss,
42 years old, burned to a crisp in the
ruins of her home In the northwestern
part of the city Sunday. A post-mor
tem examination of the corpse revealed
fifteen small pellets of metal In the
body near the Backbone. The body was
found In a summer kitchen, and neigh
bors told the police that when the fire
broke out Voss searched aft other parts
of the house before directing his atten
tion to the outbuilding, which was the
but part of the residence to take fire.
Neighbors told the police that the
couple had -quarreled frequently over
money matters.

Illness of several weeks. Rev. John W.
Humbert, a veteran Methodist minis
ter and one of the oldest members of
the South Carolina conference, having
been admitted In MSB, died at his res
idence In this city Saturday. Rev.
Humbert was 71 years of age. He Is

Mrs. M. M. Doyley, who Is at present
corresponding secretary of the Wom-

believed to be a noted Italian archae
ologist.

DEATH THREATENS
DARING AERONAUT

Salt Lake City, Utah, July 20.—With
both ankles broken and Injured Inter
nally os a result of a fall of 150 feet
from a balloon, Joseph McMann. an
aeronaut from a smalt town near Des
Moines, Iowa, Is expected to die at the
Salt palace. He ascended In a cannon
attached to a balloon. When the can
non, sustained by a parachute, was cut
loose from the balloon, McMann un
dertook to drop from the muxzle of the
cannon with a second parachute. The
’apparatus did not work properly.

LITTLE BOY DIES

Wrlghtsvllle, Ga., July 20.—Several
weeks ago Ray Brantley, the seven-
year-old son, of Mr. and Mrs. J. F.
Brantley, was bitten by a dog, but aa
the dog was not known to be mad very
little attention was paid to the child.
The wounds healed rapidly. About a
week ago the symptoms of hydrophobia
began to develop, which continued to
grow worse until the death of the little
boy came Friday afternoon.

has become of his bill to require rail
roads to keep depots open at night prior
to the departure of trains. It hasn't

police have the correct theory It waa
not a negro who assaulted Mrs. Annie
L. Tldyman, near her Home In Orch
ard Knob, Wednesday night, and fol-
lowing this theory Walter S. Mu>-
Keftsle, a talesman for the Cumberlur
Lumber Company, of Nashville, -.vu
arrested on the charge, brought to this
city Sunday afternoon by Sheriff Shipp
and lodged In Jail to await a prelimi
nary hearing, which will probably take
place In a few days.
That the theory of th# police Is prob
ably correct Is home out by threatening
letters which MaoKensIs wrote Mrs.
Tldyman because she refused lo keep
company with him.
The employees of the store where
she Is employed have raised 1220 to
prosecute her assailant.

Charleston truckers have closed one of
the most successful seaaons on record,
the produce netting thsm A profit of
11.227,005 for the 24.205 acres that they
had under cultivation. The value of
the product was 22,717,505, with a cost
of $2,520,055. making the net profit
just stated and a profit par sers of 252.
The produce raised Included cabbages,
strawberries, beans, asparagus, cucum
bers, sweet potatoes and other vegeta
bles The most profitable crop was
cabbages, the farmers shipped U*5.-
050 crates at a value of $1,415,555.

New York, July $5.—When a black
squall swooped down yesterday after
noon upon the Inward shore of the
Hudson at the foot of Two Hundred
and Sixth street. It startled more than
1,555 bathers, mostly women and chil
dren. and tried to carry off the In
wood Yacht Club’s house, moored
south or John Kooman’s big bathing
pavilion and restaurant.
After half an hour’s hard work ths
boat house was towed back to Ita place
and made fast to the piles. No one
was hurt.
