His Wanderings as a

William Belcher, who surrendered him
self at the county /all here yesterday,
showed sigds of collapsing In his cell
today. On all aldea hare the deepest
sympathy Is expressed for Belcher.

and after a week there went to
Paul, where he was reduced to poverty
by the loss of all his money In a pock-
etbook. For five months ha worked
with a street gang, first handling pick
and shovel and then aa foreman at
$2.50 a day. Early this year he event
to London, Ontario, and there was a
street laborer.
Belcher will be arraigned Friday on
a charge of embezzlement, and he says
he will throw himself on the msrey ot
the court

ested In railroad building all over the
South. In telling of the railroad boom
In that section, he said:
"because of the great demand for
the raw material which the South pro
duces, It has more business than I can
attend to. Cotton, coal and Iron are
commanding high prices, and as a re
sult, the planters, mlneis and all class
es are prosperous. In order to take
cars of all this business, old estab
lished railroads are constructing new
branches, and new lines are being built
“The Atlanta and Birmingham road
Is constructing a line from Brunswick
to Atlanta. Ths Central of Georgia Is
Improving Its lines. The Louisville
and Nashville Is double-tracking and
reducing grades. The Ullnols Central
Is building a cut-off to Corinth. Miss.
The South and Western road Is being
constructed from Burton, N. C.. to
Marion, controlled by the Seaboard
Air Lins. Ths Southern Is constantly
improving Its lines, double-tracking
and extending branches.
"One hundred miles of road Is being
built by the North Carolina and Greet
nn. Nearly all the roads are double,
tracking and reducing grades. So much
work la being done that labor la
scarce, Including negroes, who are now
getting $1.50 Instead of $1 a day. Ma
terial Is scarce because of the big
building boom throughout the country-,
and steel Is slow In delivery.”

Selddn, aged M, president of the Met
ropolitan Hotel Company, died today In
hl« apartments In the hotel after an
Illness of six weeks. Hs Is survived
by his wife.
Mr. Belden fought through the <
war on tha Confederate side, and at
the close of the conflict cams out as a
lieutenant, having been on ths stair of
General Kirby Smith. He lived In
Washington many years, and until hs
retired from active business life, some
■arm ago, was tha proprietor of ths
Metropolitan Hotel.
