The other explanation Ih found In Hart left’s Dic tionary of Americanisms (1877), where we read: "Philadelphia lawyer. That beats a Philadelphia lawver.* TI© knows as much as a Philadelphia lawyer.' These are common sayings, whence It Is to be Inferred that the bar of tho Quaker City are distinguished for their learn ing and shrewdness." (P.tge 462.)
