-.The crop reporting board of the bu
reau of etatlstlca of the department of
ifrfculture find* from the reports of
the agents of the bureau that the aver

ti 9 as compared with 83.3 on June 25,
19OS 79.9. July 25, 1905; 91.6 at the
correspond I ng date In 1904, and a ten-
year average of 82.4.
New York, Aug. 3.—Immediately fol
lowing the publication of the crop re
port there was light decline. Prices
evidently were sutalned from some
quarter, but bear pressure quickly as-
itrted Itself and there was a break of
7 to 13 points In the new crop months.
The report was better than expected.
Business was on a fairly large scale
end consisted mainly of professional
dealings. Room bears seeking to un
cover stop orders and the leading bulls
furnishing most of the support. Later
this was supplemented by room cover
ing and prices rallied several points.
The market at New Orleans dropped
I points on the report.
Two Influences worked to make a
slightly more active market for cotton
futures. The first was an encouraging
set of cables from the English market;
the second a government condition re
port more favorable than had been ex
pected by the trade.
on the better Liverpool, New York
opened steady and unchanged to an ad
vance of 3 points. ,
On the government report there was
a slow decline, a recovery and then a
•harp slump, on the theory that the
government's figures Indicate a good
crop.
After the Issuance of the report the
market, while hesitating, showed a dis
tinct downward tendency, which gath
ered force as the session advanced, un
til. In the last hour, the market waa a
state of semi-demoralisation, with
prices declining nt a rapid rate, Octo
ber nnd December selling under tho
JOc mark, or 30 and 34 ppints lower,
respectively. August was' 25 points
lower, while September showed a de
cline of 28 points.
It was reported that Prices were try
ing to liquidate.
Theodore Price save the figures Indi
cate a crop of 10,900,000 bales.
Superintendent King, of the New
York cotton exchange, makes the

the reason to date, 10,881,21$, against

The close was steady, with a re
covery in progress, final figures show
ing losses of from 23 to 32 points in

LOSSES FRACTIONAL
Market Soon Recovered and
Some Material Gains
Were Later Made.
By Print. Leased Win.
New York, Aug. I.—The stock mar.
ket was again vary Irregular, this
morning, reflecting a divergence
speculative opinion over the Immediate
outlook. Some stocks were very strong
add advanced sharply, whlls realizing
sales were heavy In others. St. Paul
rose and fell fltfully without return
ing yesterday's movement and while
Union Paclftc were much more vari
able In their changes than on previous
days. New York Central was the only
one of yestsYday's regulars to main
tain Its advance. Both Reading and
Pennsylvania, after a further rise at
the outset, felt the effects of heavy
profit-taking. The main movement of
the day centered In the stock of the
Southern companies, Louisville and
Atlantic CoastLIne gaining ground very
rapidly. No new reason developed for
the strength of this latter group.
Speculative operations seemed mere,
ly to have reached them In the usual
course of shifting from one quarter of
the market to another.
In accordance with a rather general
expectation, the stock market opened
with most Issues n shade below yes
terday's close. The trading sentiment
In favor of a reaction was strengthen
ed by the lower range from London.
Northwestern declined a point, but. as
a rule, the losses were fractional.
Louisville and Nashville showed ex
ceptlonal strength, Union Pnclflc
point and Atlantic Coast Line and
Southern Pacific scored a like advance.
In spite of the fact that no satisfac
tory news Is to obtained In regard
to the supposed pending railroad de
velopments, the market continue!)
strong after the opening day and some
further material gains were mmV-> In
the first hour. 8t. Paul advanced to
188 8-4 and Union Pacific made a gain
of 13-8. Penrtsylvanla and New York
Central scored advance*. Other stocks
made gains ranging from small frac
lions to a point, but heavy selling on)
era were in the market and the supply
of stocks was so large thst buying ord
ers at the advance were practically
swamped for the time, and continued
offers caused reactions on which prac-
tlcally all the early gains webs lost.
I^jndon bought some Union Pacific and
Erie at the opening, but later turned
seller, the sale exceeding purehaxes by
about 10,000 shares,
