Mias Clyde Crocket, of Atlanta, Is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Ben Tread That hundreds of women and girls suffer with rheumatic voices without even realizing what la the matter with their vocal cords, and that more than half of the fair sex In this city have a touch of rheumatism In the orgun of speech Is a statement recently made by a throat specialist, who derlares that though this condition Is annoy ing -It is not necessarily dangerous or it does not follow that the speech will ever be entirety lost. In Its mild form he says that It can be 'almost entirely eliminated by the diet and caleful and regular habits of living. "Rheumatism manifests Itself in the throat by hoarseness In the voice, sore ness or a decided pain In the topslls." he says, "and, yet few women know that there is anything the matter. They dismiss It with the thought that It lu what they call a cold In the tonsils, vocal cords, etc., take a little sooth ing cough mixture or a wash for the inflamed parts and forget about It. They do not know that when this con dition Is constantly recurring It means something more than a simple cold and that It takes regular If simple treat ment, such as can be given at home, to keep tt from becoming troublesome. “One of the best remedies I know for this disease is the use of pineapple. It should be eaten at least once a day, and a syrup from it drunk slowly. A bit of sugar used with this fruit makes It more palatable! but I would not make It ton sweet, for sugar does not tend to reduce the rheumatic state of thu vocal cords. , Tomatoes and Strawberries Tabooed. "For the average woman or girl suffering with this chronic hoarseness, pain, etc., I should advise her never to eat tomatoes, strawberries or lettuce, for these contain the very acids that accentuate the disease, and for that reason should never be taken. "Alcoholic beverages, especially when drunk to excess, have n detrimental effect on the voice, Just as have many of the soft drinks. Coffee, too, Is In jurious to many persons If taken more than once a day, for It Is not good for the liver, and anything that af fects the stomach acts directly upon the throat and voice, and for that rea son more effective treatment can be serured by a careful diet than by ad ministering medicines. Ten anil milk arc good to drink, if they agree with an Individual, but no liquid or food should ever bo taken when it Is either very cold or excessively hot, for cither ex treme is particularly bad for the vo< Mrs. Sam Clark, of Cedartown, Is ths JJtest of her daughter, Mrs. Sam Clark. "Beside*' pineapple, I would recom mend the use of apples nnd plenty of apple sauce for the nverngt person who has a rheumatic voice, ami I would advise them against eating oranges nnd bananas, for both Increase uric arid, and unless a person Is absolute ly sure that these fruits agree, they should not Indulge In them. "This disease Is often aggravated. If not actually Increased, by the constant use of candy, especially that with chocolate, cocoa, vanilla flavors; n fact, sweets of any kind should be In ken sparingly if the voice Is often hu» ky, or there Is a soreness In the ton sils. To Obtain Sweet Voice. "For the person who wishes to cul tivate a pleasant speaking voice I should say there were no better raw. to follow about eating than those that that the prlma donnas observe. To one familiar >vlth their habits It will be useless to eay that they never over load tbelr stomachs, and instead of taking a heavy meat, a* most of us do, they eat light food and take It oftener, frequently as many aa nve or six times during a day, but they never eat to excess nnd always on n diet that they know agrees with them. Fot Instance, some of them take no meat, for It Is not easy for them to digest It, whit* others eat all they want of It. As a rule, they see to It that they have plenty of sleep and rest, nnd Inci dentally plenty of the right .kind of exercise. "Now If a woman with a rheumatic voice follow* these rules with the modifications that suit her case, or one who has no trouble with her throat, the quality of the tone should improve, for as the general health gets better I: Immediately manifests Itself In ths voice, which gains strength and often beauty and purity of tone. "As to preventing complications In ths throat. I know of no surer way than by careful treatment of the teeth. This should be a habit that Is never neg lected for even n single meal, for noth ing Is more dangerous than to have particles of food. In which germs gath er, collect around the gums, for sooner or later these pass Into the throat and t!i, n the dnnmze i- dr,ne.
