"JM" club Tueaday afternoon at the
home of Mra. C. J. Maddox, at Inman

Mr. Joseph Cummlng Thomas, formerly
of this city, and Mrs. Verlta Sawyer,
'of Bah Francisco, who waa visiting
relatives’In the Philippine Islands.

ceremony, which was conducted by the
Rev. Mr. MeGII!, were the army offleers
and their wives at the post and the
governor of the province. The mar
riage took place at the borne of Lieu
tenant and Mrs. Butler.
Mr. Thomas’ career In the army Is
qna of much Interfat and the subject
of many hearty congratulations among
his Augusta friends. He entered the
army as a private soldier a year or
of Mr. and Mra. James Dougherty, and
Mr. and Mra. Tom Daniel, who have
taken the house together for the sum.

cently suspended, was a witness, and
charged the superintendent of police
with favoritism.

DESPONDENT WOMAN
TOOK POISON DOSE
BUT WAS RESCUED
Despondent and morose because of
continued brooding over trouble, Mrs.
Llssle Perkins, a young white woman
residing In Bellwood avenue, Tuesday
night swallowed an overdost of mor
phine.
She waa discovered,- however, before'
the poison had time to do much dam
age and was soon brought out of dan
ger.
It la understood Mra. Perkins' hui'
band left her aome time ago and that
she has been worrying considerably.
She waa arrested a few days ago on a
city charge, but waa allowed to go
free without a fine when she related to
the recorder the story of her husband.

Savannah, Ga., Aug. 8.—Tax RecelV'

flee. It la shown that there has been
an actual decrease of 2800,000 In the
amount of taxable property, due to the
fact that all corporations holding fran
chises from the state make their re
turns this year directly to the comp-
troller general. The actual Increase in
taxable property, making allowance for
this change, haa been about 21,200,000.
The taxable wealth of the county Is
something over 281,000,000 according to
the returns In the tax receiver’s office.
A falling off In the payment of poll
taxes was shown.
TWO YOUNG MEN
ARE CONVICTED
OF HOTEL ROBBERY

Savannah, Ga., Aug. 8.—S. H. Reid
and J. H. Henderson, two young men
convicted of entering rooms at Hotel
Tybee, were sentenced by Judge Cann
yesterday, the former receiving ona
year In the state prison and the latter
five years. The evidence showed that
Henderson had planned the robberies
and watched while Reid did the work.
Held Is an opium (lend. The young
men came here from Jacksonville and
went Immediately to Tybee, where they
began operations.

Augusta, Ga., Aug. 8.—The flrst new
bale of cotton this year has been re
ceived and la a week later than Iasi
year, aa the flrst bale last year waa
placed In front of the Augusta cotton
exchange on July 21. The bale last
year saULfdr'19 7-8'cents at'.auction.
ThF new bale, brought to Augusta
waa placed In front of !the - exchange
at about 4 o’clock Tuesday. It waa
consigned to'Clarke A' Butt, one ol
the new cotton Arms In Augusta, and
they will sell the bale In front of the
cotton exchange today at auction. The
cbtton waa. raised by H. M. Eldrldgc,
a prominent farmer of Sumter county.

REFU8E TO ACCEPT
THE COLUMBIAN HALF.

Valdosta, Ga., Aug. 8.—A bank of
Valdosta recently received from the
treasury at Washington 81,000 In "Co
lumbian" half dollars, which It Is hav
ing considerable trouble putting In cir
culation. When the coins made their
appearance here a few days ago, owing
to their oddity and to the fact that
many people thought they were at a
premium, they were accepted readily,
and there were many Inquiries for
them In the city. Not so, however, in
other sections. The bank shipped less
than 2100 In theae coins to an out-of-
town customer and today received a
letter from the customer stating that
the coins could not be used, as tha
lieople there refused to accept them.
The bank has been notified that the
coins will be returned.
