This Is the quick retort of. ,tJio French to Mr. Rockefeller's comment on the size of French women's feet. It Is apparent, however, that the French have mistaken a mere handful the real American girl. Through curious error, they have mistaken thir ty school teachers, who were selected for the tour by reason of their popu larity as prize winners In a beauty contest In which all America partici pated. Do Not Claim to be Bsautiss. la no reflection on these thirty to say that primarily they make' no pretensions to beauty. They are liv ing witnesses to the fact that other qualities besides beauty weigh with the Kentuckians. Mr. Watterson threw open the polls to all of his Kentucky fellow cltlsena and asked them, by their ballots, to select the thirty school marmi" who enjoy the great est popularity In the community where they preside over the rod and the 'rlthmetlc. It la not surprising that some of the elect are not distinguished by great facial charm or entrancing outline of figure. Qualities of heart and mind entered Into the competition, sweetness of disposition and strength of character. 1 Thus, selected, the thirty embarked orf their travels. Theli-'approaeh was heralded In Paris, but before they ar rived Mr. Rockefeller’s remarks on the site of the French women's feet were given to the world, and behold a mob of critical Frenchmen watting the traveling American girl* at St. Laxare Station, with mocking laughter when facial defects. They are followed about wherever they go. photographed for the French press and held up aa "specked peaches" for the derision of French crowds. Sad Tsst of French Gallantry, It la clear that the French do not appreciate merit. It Is also clear that the French are unable to distinguish between beauty and popularity. And It Is similarly clear that French gal lantry Is not Impervious to an honest criticism that strikes home. Americana will be glad td learn that the school marms are going about their business without paying any attention to the sensation they are creating, nnd are even broad-minded enough to find some things in Faria to excite their admiration. It may dawn upon the French mind Anally that they are real ly making a display of those qualities which outdistance mere beauty In the competition .which resulted In sending these young wot •t.i.w.d. end t>,;■ t their popularity la something more tangible and lasting than the beauty which the French find lacking In them, and munch more to be admired.
