defied Police Call Officers Hulsey and
ltrannan, and barricading himself In
i house, refused to allow them to en

Mrs. Herman, the wife, who had got
outside of the house, ad.vlsed the po
lice to burst open the door and get her
husband. The officers then telephoned
Chief Jennings, asking him what ac
tion to take, and he advised them not
,) break the door.
on returning to the police station,
the two officers left Instructions for the
morning watch men to make the ar
rest, and Bicycle Policemen Pate and
Mashburn visited the house about 3
o'clock. • Herman at first declined to
grant them admittance, stating that he
would appear In court Thursday morn
ing of his own accord. The officers In-
Flsted they merely wanted to talk with
him and finally persuaded him to open
the door.
As the door oi>encd and Herman
came Into view, Pate and Mashburn
nabbed him and sent him to the police
station. Herman had refused to admit
the two call officers on the ground that
thev had no warrant for his arrest.
At the police station three cases
were docketed against the prisoner,
„ne of them charging disorderly con
duct, another charging idling and loit
ering. and the third charging the ob
struction of officers In the discharge
of their duty. He will be arraigned
for trial In police court Thursday af
ternoon.
The trouble Is said to have been
caused by Mrs. Herman leaving home
Wednesday night to visit her brother,
who resides In Fair street. Herman,
she Informed the police, objected to her
making the visit, but she persisted In
going notwithstanding the objection.
About 10 o'clock Mm. Herman re
turned home, In company with her
brother, and the husband Is accused of
creating an exciting scene. He Is said
to have made it lively for both his
wife and brother-in-law, after which
the police station was notified.

nor Duncan J. Heyward, of South Car-

the camp maneuvers, escorted by his

of the explosion of a gasoline atove
three persons were severely burned this
morning Ip northeast Baltimore. They
are:

That kind of thing Is baffling pnough
to most of us, but when this slender,
gentlemanly fellow allows himself
handcuffed, tied In a bag. nailed se
curely In a practically alr-tlght box.

Wednesday evening In the presence of
a curious crowd that -packed every
nook In the Casino. Daniel Brothers
Company Issued the challenge, and
Brlndamour accepted It. The box was
prepared by the Arm, and was made
of good stout hoards and the exhibi
tion took place under the dlreet es
pionage of six employee* of the house.
First Brlndamour was heavily man
acled at the wrists and ankles, and hla
hands handcuffed to the chain* at his
feet. Then he was slipped Into a bag
which was securely Med at the top. In
the stooping position he Just fltted
Into the box comfortably. The top.
made of one solid piece, was nailed
down with twelve-penny spikes, and
the committee saw to it that there were
enough to hold. Then the box waa
roped several times securely. .
In the center of the stage was a red-
curtained booth behind which the box
rolled. The committee took sta
tions about the booth to Intercept any
possible outside collusion. The box
with Its human contents was hidden
less hush. No sound came from the
stage. Afterwards one of the commit
tee stated that the only sound heard
by him as he stood within a foot of
the booth was a muffled scuffling.
When ten minute* had pa*sed «ome
one started a hand-clapping, hut It fell
dead with no response from the audi
ence. whose every nerve seemed Htrnin-
ed. The look on all face* was one of
wondering expectancy.
At fourteen minutes past 9 the cur
tain suddenly parted and Brlndamour
stood there beside the box. manacles
In one hand, sack ln the other. The
box was rolled to the front of the
stage, examined minutely, showing ah- I
aolutely no trace of having been dis
turbed and with the cords still about It.

creating Interest In the hearts of many

dewing for another book which will
attempt to weave a romance out of the
peculiarities of the old place. Mr.
