He contended that this was a better In vestment than esn be usually made on an amount of such magnitude. The members of the committee were not In favor of renewing the lease at any time, and certainly not at this ses sion, thirteen years before the expira tion of the old lease. Chairman Lad, Representative Alex- ander and Rapreeentatlva Brinson fa vor the extension of the road to the sea and possibly to both the gulf end the Atlantic. Starke waa also before the grand Jury on a charge of keeping a saloon open on Sunday, no true bill being found. Starke stated that he had no Interest In any saloon. CITY MARSHAL DIES IN ABBEVILLE JAIL Nprctal to The Georgian. Abbeville, Go.. Aug. 1.—City Marshal Tom Sawyer died In the county Jail here yesterday afternoon. He had been delirious for a few days, and had be come so dangerous and unmanageable that he wee yesterday morning placed In the county Jell here to await lunacy proceedings. Former Chicago Man Dis gusted With Work From Colored Man. ANNUAL REUNION OF.THIBTV-FIFTH GA, Dinner Spread on Grounds and Barbecue Served to the Veterans. Special to Tbe Georgian. Conyers, Oa., Aug. The Thirty- fifth Georgia regiment held Its reunion at this place .yesterday, the guests of the Conyers Chapel, U. D. C. There were present thirty-rtvo survivors of the regiment nnd' two or three hundred veterans of other organizations. The veterans were taken In charge by W. F. McDaniel, master of ceremonies, who hod them assemble at the court-house, where they were provided with badges and formed for march to the new rock warehouse, where the exercises were condueted. General C. A. Evans- delivered the address of tho occasion and It was very much enjoyed by all present. After the general had finished his address a bountiful basket dinner and barbecue was partaken of. Several short addresses were made by local and visiting veterans, anil a camp was organized during the after noon. SERVED BY SHERIFF fipeclnl to The Georgian. Augusta, Ga„ Aug. 9.—The grand lodge of tha Ancient Order United Workmen opened here yesterday morn ing with about fifty delegates present, together with the grand lodge officers. Grand Master Workman H. M. 'Beck presiding. There were a number of Important matters taken up In secret session after the short opening cere monies. After the opening ceremonies'n short organising meeting was held, end then the officers end delegates went to the Plat- snd enjoyed a delightful barbecue dinner, which had been prepared for them under the able supervision of one of their members, Harry H. Morris, sheriff of the city of Augusta. After the 'cue and later In the after noon the delegates were taken for a spin around the car lines, and then to Lake View, where they were given a boat trip over the waters. They had to be on the go all the afternoon, and to day they will be ready to again take up the bualneas matters before the grand lodge. BIERLEY TO SAIL FOR HIS VACATION By W. O. CLEMENT. Special to The Georstsn. Rome. Oa., Aug. I.—J. B. Clark, who moved to Floyd county several years ego from Chicago and purchased a form near Rome, hoe decided to give up farming here and will return to file old home. Mr. Clark says that he has found that farming was unprofitable la this section, owing to the Inability of se curing competent laborers. He said that he would hire negroes to work on his farm, thinking they were trust worthy, and In a few days they would skip out without giving him any no tice. Mr. Clark says that his views In re gard to the negro have changed ma terially since he came South. Will Enter New Business. George W. Campbell, a well-known bualneas man of Rome, has been ap pointed general Southern agent of the Underwriters' Salvage Company, and has made arrangements to open an of fice in Atlanta. He will have quite a force of men working directly under him. Attending Maneuvers. Captain Barry Wright and quite a number of the Hill City cadets left yesterday morning for Chlckamauga to attend the army maneuvers. Columbus, Oa., Aug. 9.—The Wood Campbell distillery, located In Girard, was totally destroyed by nre Tuesday night, the lose being about $3,000. The •till had only been In operation about a month, nnd Mr. Campbell, the owner, had not cleared the Interest on the money Invested. The Are Is believed to have been Incendiary. Eighteen bar rels of whisky were saved, but a large lot of bottled goods was destroyed. GOVERNOR BLANCHARD ADDRESSES VETERANS Hpivlnl to The Georgian. Baton Rouge, Lo.. Aug. 9.—The an nual reunion of the United Confederate Veterans, tho United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confed erate Veterans began here today with large attendances at the sessions of each of the organisations. Governor Hlunchard delivered the address of wel come on behalf of the state, and Mayor W. H. Bynum for (he city. The re union Is being held at Garlg Hall. This evening thero will be a flower parade and at night tableaux, songs and other patriotic features, conclud ing with a dance. Curtis, at Oakdale, slashed hts throat through the larynx, but ns death did not corns quick enough he stabbed himself twice In the right breast, each time reaching the lung, using a pocket knife, and will probably die.
