ROCKEFELLER CHAMPION OF THE AMERICAN.GIRL’S FOOT, MAKES FRENCH PAPERS VERY MAD SOCIAL CLUB FINED FOR SELLING LIQUOR Accused of Abusing Wife, Charles Herman Gives Trouble. Charles Herman, of 10 Courtland street, accueed of mistreating Me wife and her brother Wednesday ntrht about. 10 o'clock, a abort while later defied Police Call Offlcera Hulsey and Hrannan, and barricading hlmaelf In hia houae, refused to allow them to en ter to are ret him. Mrs. Herman, the wife, who had got outside of the house, advised the po lice to burst open the door and get her husband. The officers then telephoned Chief Jennings, asking him what ac tion to take, and he advised them not to break the door. On returning to the police 'station, the two officers left Instructions for the morning watch men to make the ar rest, and Bicycle Policemen Pate and Mashburn visited the house about 3 o'clock. Herman at first declined to grant them admittance, stating that he would appear In court Thursday morn ing of his I own accord. The officers In sisted they merely wanted to talk with him and finally persuaded him to open the door. As the door opened and Herman came into view, Pate and Mashburn nabbed him and sent him to the police station. Herman had refused to admit the two call officers on the ground that they had no warrant for his arrest. At the police station three rases were docketed against the prisoner, one of them charging disorderly con duct, another charging Idling and lolt- structlon of officers In the discharge of their duty. He will be arraigned for trial In police court Thursday af ternoon. The trouble Is said to have been caused by Mrs. Herman leaving home Wednesday night to visit her brother, who resides In Fair street. Herman, she Informed the police, objected to her making the visit, but she persisted In going notwithstanding the objection. About 10 o'clock Mrs. Herman re turned home. In company with her brother, and the husband Is accused of creating an exciting scene. He Is said to have made It lively for both his wife and brother-in-law, after which the police station was notified. The Beauvoir Club, one of the mnet fash ionable society clubs of the city, waa yesterday afternoon found guilty of selling liquor on Sunday and lined 33d. The trial was attended by many of Montgomery's most prominent society men. This club has u membership of over 300 and It Is composed of the most prominent cltlsens of Montgom ery. The attorneys for the club claimed that under tha club's charter It had a light to sell liquor on Sunday or any other day. The box waa prepared by the firm, and was made of good stout boards and the exhlbl tlon took place under the direct es plonsge of six employees of the house. First Brtndamour waa heavily man acled at the wrists and ankles, and his hands handcuffed to the chains at hts which waa securely I the stooping position he just Itted made of one solid piece, was down with twelve-penny spikes, and the committee saw to It that there were jugh to hold. Then the box waa jed several times securely. _n the center of the stage waa a red- curtained booth behind which the box was rolled. The committee took sta tions about the booth to Intercept any possible outside collusion. The box with Its human contents waa hidden behind the curtain at exactly 9 o'clock. Flro minutes passed amid a breath less hush. No sound came from the stage. Afterwards one of the commit tee stated that the only sound heard by him as he stood within a foot of the booth waa a muffled scuffling. When ten minutes had passed some one started a hand-clapping, but It fell dead with no response from the audi ence. whose overy nerve seemed strain ed. The look on all faces was one of wondering expectancy. At fourteen minutes past 9 the cur tain suddenly parted and Brtndamour stood thtre beside the box. manacles In one hand, sack In the other.
