punched here today. The party has
given him 17 nominations by acclama
tion. From now on, gathering force at
the state convention at Springfield next
Tuesday. “Cncle" Joe’s movement Is
expected to Increase In popularity
through Indorsements of other state
conventions until It makes him the
nominee of the national convention.
A popular demand from every county
of the Eighteenth district, which
?t*ncle" Joe was unable to stem, will
eompei the Indorsement today. Until
ft few days ago he insisted that such
an action be not taken, as it might
detract from the enerrfV of the Repub

LYNCHING IS FEARED

Jacksonville, Fla.. Aug. 16.—Henry
Davis, an aged white man, who was
murderously assaulted at his home, 19
miles west of this city Monday night,
while asleep In bed. by an unknown
man, who used nn axe. died last night.
At the same time the assailant at
tempted to assault Mrs. Davis, hut her
•creams frighten*d him away.
Two deputy sheriffs with a citizens*
posse of Go men are scouring the woods
for the murderer. Davis was a prom
inent man In his home section and a
planter 70 years old.
If caught the assailant will be
lynched.

A PHANTOM REPORT
A phantom was chased for more than
two hours In the neighborhood of Pratt
iind Gilmer streets by officers Chan
dler and Luck Wednesday.
Late In the afternoon some one called
up the police station and said If an
officer were sent to the corner of Pratt
and Gilmer streets the negro who at
tempt to assault Mrs. Hembree in Bat-

Officers Luck and <’handler grabbed
their bikes and hustled out of the
headquarters like a young cyclone.
When they reached their destination
a young white man appronched them
and told them If they would follow a
"feller who had Just gone ’round the
comer" they could catch the man who
assaulted Mrs. Hembree.
The two officers rode round the cor
ner, but didn't see nay one. They rode
arountl another corner and another and
still another, until perspiration was
pouring off of them In streams, hut no
"feller who had gone 'round the cor
ner" did they see.
The two officers notified Patrolmen
Dodd and Norman, who took up the
chase where Luck and Chandler hud
left off, and after turning several more
corners they cornered the phantom.
The cornered man gave his name as
Murphy, but didn’t seem to know ex
actly what he did know, because he
didn’t know It. He was turned loose.

Lafayette, Ind., Aug. 18.—Big Four
passenger train No. 44, known as the
Cincinnati fast mall, which left Chi
cago at 9 p. m. last night, whtlf run
ning at a speed of 50 miles an hour
collided with nn extra freight train two
mllea west of here at 1 o’clock this
morning.
Several of the passengers were cut
by broken glass, but all were able to
proceed on their journey. The crews
on both engines Jumped. Engineer
Washburn had his back Injured, and
It is feared that he is hurt Internally.
Engineer Chrlutlnn. of the passenger
train, was Injured about the head, and
Express Messenger Burt Thomjis was
injured In the side and back.

RALLY AT COVINGTON.

Covington, Ga., Aug. 16.—The New
ton County Farmers' Institute held a
rally here, a large crowd being pres
ent. The speaking, which occurred In
the court house, was begun by Mr.
Stewart, followed by Mrs. W. H. Fel
ton, who spoke upon the subject of
farming and education.
After Mrs. Felton's address the
meeting adjourned to the Academy
Springs, where a barbecue, under the
direction of a committee composed of
F. D. Ballard. Lewis, Maddox nnd
others, was prepared. In the afternoon
Colonel L. F. Livingston delivered a
practical address on marketing cotton,
and G. W. Hunnlcut followed with the
subject of science on the farm. A. C.
Lewis, assistant state entomologist,
spoke on the subjects of Insects and
their effects on cotton.

discussed the proposed trip to New

SUSPICIOUS NEGRO
HELD UP TRAIN CREW

Decatur, Ala., Ayg. 16.—With a pair
of ugly looking revolvers, of large cal
iber, In hla hands. Ale?; Holt, a negro,
boarded a Louisville and Nashville
freight train near Newcastle, not far
from Birmingham, nnd ordered Engl-
neer B. A. Thomas nnd the rest of the
crew to not molest him at the peril of
their lives. The train men were afraid
to molest him. and ns a result the train
was practically under the negro’s
charge from Newcastle to New De
catur, a distance of about 80 mllea.
When the train reached New Decu
tur Engineer Thomas pulled the train
Into the shop yards. A crowd of men
gathered nround nnd the negro
was ordered down from off the train.
Seeing that lie had been trapped and
knowtrg that resistance nt this point
ns useless, he came from off the
train, but when he reached the ground
hanged his mind and It required
the assistance of live policemen
place him In Jail.
His conduct cannot be accounted for,
unless he hnd committed n crime Home
lier© and was making a hold effort to
escape the officers of the law.

commissioners met yesterday nnd ap
propriated $10,ooo for the Improvement
of the Floyd county Jail. The work
will begin soon after the meeting next

bidder for the reconstruction work will
be given the contract.

Albany Is "broke.*’ For the first time
in three years the city treasurer finds
that he Is without funds with which to
carry on the city’s business. This is
due to the fact that the city made the
last payment of $6,000 on the street
paving that was recently done here.

Savannah, Ga., Aug. 16.—The South
ern Bell Telephone Company Is mak
ing extensive Improvements In its un
derground wire facilities by which It
will be able lo care for 1,700 addi
tional subscribers.

pose of aiding the Geological Survey
of the United States government In
making an examination of the waters
