ALABAMA 8CHOOL
IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION.
The Alubama Federation of Women's
Clubs has undertaken a line of work

lu the school system of that state, and

ful consideration of feminine organiza
tions In other states.
The Montgomery Journal of last Sat
urday afternoon, In referring to Fed
eration enterprises, says:
“But whatever degree of ttilth or
Justice may have been to the criti
cisms hitherto received. It has recent
ly undertaken u line of work which
we challenge the most captious to be
dissatisfied; that Is, the Improvement
of the rural schools and school houses
of Alabama, and the awakening und
arousing of that |u>rtlon of our popu
lation who have hitheito been apathet
ic, in regard to education and educa
tional matters.
Utilizing the pressing need of an
advance In this direction, they have
entered the neglected Held in a prac
tical and systematic manner, by ap
pointing a committee of tb* Federa
tion, known as the school Improvement
association committee, composed of the
following-ladles: Mrs, J. D. Matlock,
chairman, Birmingham; Mrs. 'John D.
Wyker, Decatur: Mrs. Emma Craig
head, Mobile: Mrs. R. E. Wlel, Selma,
and Mrs. E. D. Thomas, Greenville.
“The members of this committee
act as organizers, establishing In each
county seat associations of the women
whose especial duty Is to Improve and
take charge of the school houses which
they or their neighbors' children fre
quent. These organizations are formed
with the customary officers and various
committees are suggested to them, Buch
as a committee on building, on grounds,
on books,, etc., whose duty Is to raise
funds to Improve the facilities already
there or to supply those lacking.
“Nor are the city schools overlook,
ed, associations being formed with aux
iliary organizations for each school
house within the city limits. And. al
though the movement has been In ex
Istence hardly two years, the results
have already proved most encourag
ing, prophesying a future replete with
frutl In the shape nf neat, cheerful,
sanitary school buildings, supplied
