" “ ' M.-No. 33, DAILY.—Pullman The women In the rural districts of Fulton county and In the suburbs of Atlanta have been terrified either Into confining themselves to their Immedi ate premises or to securing arms with which tc, protect themselves from pos slble attack from such brutes as the- negro who made the assult on Miss Lawrence Monday. One of the county policemen said to day that he had seen several women who carted pistols when they went uny distance from home. Chief Turner of the county polios has advised that women in Isolated portions of the city or county stay where they can call help In case of need. He thinks that this would be best until the present agitation cools down, at any rate. Most of the county officers are of the opinion that the negro who com mitted the crime of Monday was the same who made one or two of the other attacks which have occurred re cently In the vicinity of Atlanta. They cite the fact that the description le similar and the actions of the negro were nearly the same. The county police think the negro could have been captured on Peachtree creek Monday afternoon If there had been nny way of Intelligently directing: the movements of the crowd of over 300 citizens who were In the chase, and that his fresh tracks were found The fact that the negro was seen once several limes seems to bear out thi, assertion. No Information has been received to' day which can help t* locate the fugi tlve. The county officials are not In rllned to believe that the negro undet nrrest at the police station Is the man ho committed the crime. Ala., Ang. 22,-tfThe atate cotton mill at Spelwer'a will pat on a night iMtt to utilise the hands removed there last week from th-s Montgomery Cordage Company. Thi will largely In* crease the output *and the profits. The total net earnthgs for the state mill for the nineteen months ended July 31 was $43,977.78. All this time the mill fa paying well to the convlet fund proper, the amount for Jnly being 9976. It Is thus shown that the mill Is a double feeder to the atata treasury, earning prof its from the cotton manufactured and from tbs hire of a ctaaa of convicts not useful at any other service.
