DEAD IN VALPARAISO
NOW NUMBER 1,000
Special Cable—Copyright.
Valparaiso, Aug. 2.—The city is calm
today and the people are optimistic,
Carefull estimates place the property
loss at lest than $100,000,000 and while
the death list will be awful, the first
reports, it is now believed, were mqra
or leas exaggerated, and the beat Im
pression now is that the number of
dead will be near 1,000 In Valparaiso
and perhaps a 8 many more at other
points In the provinces which were af
fected by the shock.
The authorities are* putting all the
able-bodied men to work clearing away
the wreckage and some progress is be
ing made. Martial law still Is rigidly
enforced and short shrift Is given to
the crooks found guilty of looting.
There are still 60,000 people depend
ent upon the distribution of food and
while there are rations for them for
several days yet, the authorities will
be glad when new supplies begin to
ct'mr in.
President-elect Montt and retiring
resident Fresco have been powerful
influences In getting the situation In
l and. News which comes in from the
s ; i r-.undlng country Indicates that the
heaviest damage was done in the pro
vinces of Valparaiso and Aconcagua«
Business houses are beginning to
open up again and plans are being dis
cussed for the rebuilding of the city.

match within earshot of the noils. This
feature and the belief that there will be
a record-breaking vote cast are being
talked of widely.
It has been estimated that between
1,000 and 1,250 of the possible 1,387
voters registered will visit the polls.
The gubernatorial race was settled In
the minds uf most of those who kept
elose to the polls about noon, nnd since
that time the chief topic of conversa
tion has been the mayorallty race.
Much money has been flashed on
both slues. Bets that Joyner would
carry the city were refused, and the
Joyner men refused money that Oood-
wln would carry three or more wards.
It Is believed thnt Smith will poll
three votes to Howell's one.

State and county vote at 2:30
o’clock, 665.
Voting opened up briskly at the
fourth ward polls Wednesday morning,
and within the first hour and a half
200 ballots were east. The city and
county voting places Were about
yards apart, and the intervening space
was filled with heelers of the various
candidates. One energetic partisan
had the name of his favorite on the
widest part of a broom in boxcar let
ters, and waved it at each approach
ing voter.
The first man to cast his vote In the
ward for state and county officers
was H. Lewis, and for city officials
was Hugh D. Farter.
No trouble of any kind had been re
jected ut the polling places up until
2:30 o'clock. Goodwin was conceded to
have had the advantage earlier In the
day, but at this hour the Joyner men
claim that their candidate is running
neck and neck with Goodwin and will
carry the ward. Both I)r. B. E. Pearce
and M. M. Turner claim to be In the
lead for councilman.
Hdke Smith Is enslly far In the lead
for 1 he governorship and will probably

ers-on were about. •
At this hour It looks like a practical
split between ilowell and Smith. Joy
ner Is leading for mayor, and the vote
for county treasurer is so divided that
no one can tell who Is leading.
Indications are that almost the en
tire Registered vote will be polled.

polls closing at 3, Total registration
in the county Is 2,545. The total vote,
