ZACH ROWAN'S NAME TERRORjra NEGROES One Jumped Out of a Win dow and Other Hid Un der Bed Clothes. Mounted Officer Zach Rowan, whose name la spoken in a tone of awe among the negroes and the lower clansea of whiten of Atlanta, had quite a ■ little experience Thursday night, in that he saw for himself what terror his name inspired. During the wee nma’ hoqrs of Fri day mom while Zach Rowan was slumbering peacefully, (It Is said how ever, that Zach never sleeps.) some one rapped on his front door and told him to come down In a hurry. When the officer reached the scene of the trouble he learned that a negro had been trying to break Into the home of M. H. Haney, 133 West Fair. While he and Haney and a neighbor were In an alley Investigating, a negro came down the alley at full tilt. This night started a chase w'hlch kept up for more than eight blocks, a crow’d of about -fifty men and boys following and firing at the negro. In the meantime, Officer Rowan was Investigating the neighborhood for witnesses, and on entering a negro house he found a colored man wrap ped up In a bundle of bed clothes still wearing his street clothes. The negro, whose name was George Holmes, con fessed to Rowan and was fined $25 and costs by Acting Recorder Walter Tay lor, councilman from the Sixth ward. E<1 Fowler, the negro who was chased, said that he had been up In a club room and someone shouted, "here comes Zach Rowan,” so he "Jemped out and flew*.” Fowler was fined 65 and costs. WOODWARD THANKS • VOLUNTEER FRIENDS Mayor James G. Woodward has Is sued the following letter of thanks to the friends who voted for him in his race for county treasurer: Atlanta, Ga., August 24, 1906. To my many friends In the city of Atlanta and Fulton county who cast their ballots for me In the recent elec tion I wish to extend my most sincere thanks, and especially do I thank them because their every ballot was volunta rily cast for me, as I had no literature of any description and all the workers In my behalf w’ere volunteers. While led my opponents In the city, my ma Jorlty here was not sufficient to over come the vote In the county outside of Atlanta. Although a great many of my warm friends did not want to vote for me for county treasurer because of th(* pleft that my services In the past had been too valuable In city affairs, and be- ause they had a desire to keep mein i more active political life, yet l at tribute my defeat more to my inability to get out from the mayor’s office and make a more active campaign. On account of the many duties of my po sition, which I could not get my consent to neglect In any way, I was unable to visit more than one-third of the business houses, none of the office buildings and only eight or ten of the shops of the city. My having received such a magnificent vote under such conditions makes my debt of gratitude the more binding. With no unkind feelings to any of my friends who were committed to oth- r candidates. I again desire to thank 11 of my friends In this city who have been so kind to me In the past. Hoping that the time and opportunity may pre sent Itself when I can In a measure re pay it all, I am.
