Tucson, Aria., Aug. 24.—There was a
red-hot Republican primary here yea- I
terday, the storm center being the I
statehood tight for delegates to the
territorial convention. The Issue was I
Joint statehood, and the antis won by
thirty-eight majority. The jofntlsts
east 46 per cent of the total vote.
The Southern Pacific and all other!
corporations and all Federal and ter
ritorial officials save the United States
marshal's office worked solidly against
the Joint statehood ticket. Fully 30 per
cent of the antis voted the Democratic I
ticket, which Is the first step to merge I
Republicans and Democrats In a terrl-
torlal joint statehood struggle. The I
statehood forces are greatly elated with |
the triumph today, they having secured
a much larger vote than expected. 1
