W. Landrum's pastorate, but by all lovers of good music who were fortunate enough to be preseat at the morning and evening services at this splendid new church. At no period of the history of sacred music In Atlanta has more absolutely delightful and satisfactory programs been rendered than those presented Sunday morning and evening by the choir of the First Baptist church under the direction of Professor J. P. O'Don nelly, organist. The regular choir. Mm. Peyton H. Tood (soprano), Miss Marguerite Dun lap (alto), Mr. Thomas B. Davies (tenor), Mr. John S. Scott (bass), Mr. C. T. Wurm (cornetlst), and Mr. J. P. O'Donnelly (organist and director), waa augmented by the following well known vocallsta: Sopranos. Mrs. W. S. Elkin, Jr.. Mm. B. D. Silver, Miss Louise Van Harllnggen: altos, Mrs. Clarence Blosser, Mr*. W. T. Perker- son, Mr*. F. A. Wynne: tenors, Mr. F. L. Tllke, Mr. Marlon Roberts, Mr. Charles Hoke. The morning program was thorough ly classlr, embracing selections and ar rangements from Wagner, Chopin and Donlsettl, each number of which, whether vocal or on organ or cornet, was faultlessly rendered. The cornet eolos by Mr. Charles Wurm and the organ preludes and postludes hy Profesaor O'Donnelly were exquisite contributions to the beautiful programs. SCHOOL BOOKS AND ALL SUPPLIES AT JOHN M. Very Inrge congregations, necessi tating the use of chairs in the aisles at both morning and evening services, manifested the most appreciative and critical enjoyment of the splendid music. Dr. Landrum’s sermon in the morn ing was a brief but Appropriate and eloquent effort, from the text, "I have kept the faith.” There was no ser mon at night, only the beautiful song service. Dr. Landrum and hts congregation enter upon the eleventh year of his pastornte In Atlanta under the bright- est and most hopeful auspices, loved and respected by his people and by the' ritlxen* of Atlanta, Dr. Lan drum celebrated on Sunday another anniversary with even greater manl fcatntlon* of the esteem and affection In which he Is held, than* ever before. Kendrick have Such Is the plan officials of the board of education now have under consid eration. Impetus to the movement has been given by the fact that Cleveland has announced Its Intention of having the first school of this kind In th country. ‘‘The Idea Is not as new as Cleveland people evidently'believe,” said Edward B. Shallow, acting superintendent, In the absence of Superintendent Maxwell, In discussing this matter. "In our own city the plan of teaching girls how to do their work as wives was one of Jho objects In view In the establishment hy the board of education of two of our Institutions—the technical high school for girls and the domestic classes In the vacation schools. "There the girl Is taught sewing, cooking, applied art* and other courses In the study outlined by the Cleveland board for Its new school. First aid to the Injured, treatment for heat prostra tion, caring for the hair, changing th* clothing of an invalid without remov ing him from the bed, and other Im portant lessons are given by trained nurses. The chief difference between the courses given in New York and those to be given In the Cleveland school seems to He, In the fact that we have no one line of studies given over for the preparation of girls to be come wives. Our courses have a more general aspect, training a child to look after her little brothers and slaters or one who Is already a wife to care for her children.” In the latter case thlikclty already has. In the vacation playgrounds, courses which would of necessity be placed In the curriculum of such a school as that proposed. Experienced nurses give young mothers Instruction in proper feeding, bathing and cloth ing of Infants and prescribe remedies for simple ailments. Miss Evangeline E. Whitney, the district superintend ent In charge of the vacation schools, of New York, says the Ignorance of these young mother* Is appalling. Miss Whitney's report to the super intendent says that mothers often ask to be taught certain kinds of work sc they may assist their children at home, With the Inauguration of the proposed school these things will become known to girls at an early age. so they can marry with a full knowledge of all In domestic science that a wife should know.
