THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN. FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 7. ISO*. 15 STEADY IN TONE Due to <a Steady Set of Ca blcs From the English Market. WEATHER FAVORABLE Xbe Two Cotton Associa tions of South Working at Cross Purposes. Bt private Lemcd Wire. vew York, Sept. 8.—The cotton mar- w e t was unsettled but X to 5 point* hleher »n the steady Liverpool cables. T he weather remained favorable In the south, Inducing further bear pres aure front that quarter. There was nothing doing In the mar ket for futures today, the trade gener- i illy preferring to hold off . pending the government report on Monday before | making new commitments on either f aide of the account. ' cron accounts have been of the most favorable character up to a few days naet, hence a bearish report Is ex isted The condition report will prob- Ki, show the crop In excellent ehape Sp to and Including August 25th, but nrcrile in position to know state posi tively that there has been great de terioration since that date. Mr W. F. Bragglns, division freight av'ent of the Texas Pacific lines, after an extended trip through north Texas and points around Dallas, says: "The cotton crop In north Texas deteriorat ed almost 25 per rent on account of heavy and continuous rains. Farmers are feeling blue, as they had been led to expect an almost phenomenal out- nut The boll weevil has started his work In spots and Is playing havoc. Rains hnve kept crop from being pick ed snd much cotton badly damaged.” The two cotton associations met dur ing the week each agreeing on a mini mum price at which the yield should he marketed, the National Farmers' Educational and Co-operative Union Axing the price at lie. It did not es timate the crop, but stated that the deterioration In the crop warranted that price. The Southern Cotton Association fixed the minimum price at 10c and report has It that It unofficially esti mated the crop at 12,760,000 bales. The man that makes the cotton can take his choice. It Is probable he can tell at either price. If the Farmers' Union will work In harmony and the crop should fall short of the South ern Cotton Association’s estimate It will he an easy matter to get Ita mini mum price. •• - Estimated receipts Monday: 1908. 1906. STOCKS STARTED MOSTLY LOWER Volume of Business Was Only Moderate the First Hour. TONE WAS STEADY Bank Statement Was Much Worse Than Expected, But Relief Expected. By Private Leased Wire. New York, Sept. I.—The stock mar ket today opened dull and without defi nite tendency. Shortly afterward It hardened somewhat when stocks like Brooklyn Rapid Transit. Erlo and some of the Steel group developed strength. The active trading was confined to these few issue* during tho great part of the seesslon. In view of the money market conditions, the bank statement, waa awaited with more than the us ual Interest, and the trading (luring the flrnt half hour reflected It. For all the expectations were of a poor showing the professional element made much of the fact that large gold engage ments wlil be announced on next Mon day, and the bull cliques can bp trust ed to make proper market use of that ‘stimulating Influence." The bank figures were a* unfavor able as expected. The reserve de creased 69.447,600, wiping out the sur plus, leaving Instead a deficit of 66,677,- 926. Notwithstanding the contraction In the loan Item of 612,000,000 and a decrease In deposits of very nearly 628,000,000, the loss In cash wan 616,- 408,100. This Is more than bank ac tually lost tbla week, but It accounts for the loss of last week, which did not appear In the previous statement. The stock market took the unfavor able showing well. Prices shaded off slightly at flrat, but soon rallied and the close waa the beat figures of tha day. . W The stock market opened Irregular. St. Paul. Pennsylvania, the Steel st.-eks and Southern Paelflc were unchanged. Reading declined 1-8, Canadian Paci fic 1-2, Smelting 3-8, Great Northern preferred 5-8 and St. Paul 3-8.. After rallying Union Pacific declined 5-8, Northern Pacific gained 1 1-8, Brook lyn Rapid Tranalt 1-2; Krle 1-4 and Amalgamated 1-8. After tho opening trading further fractional recessions occurred In some stocks while others rallied. Although the volume of business was only moderate the tone was decidedly strong, and It was a matter of com ment that the flood of stocks sold yes terday by Western houses had been •vb'-ll- absorb,'ll and that buying "fl- ers this morning could only be execut ed at advancing prices. The only large crowds were In Brooklyn Rapid Transit, Erie nnd Reading. London bought a small amount < Erie and sold some Steel common, ht arbitrage brokers stated that It waT hard to trade with London today be cause of the Interest shown In the boat race.
