There existed In Japan, many years ago, a young princess, so blond and handsome that she was called Princess Yama-Mal, which, in the language of the Japanese, means the princess of the golden hair. The empress, who was Yama-Mal's stepmother, hated the beautiful prin cess Intensely, to such an extent that she obtained from her husband the powerful Mikado, an order of banish ment against Yama-Mal, who waa ex iled to a solitary country, far, very far from the court. The soldiers who conducted her thither received secret Instructions from the Empress,-and Yama-Mal was taken to a distant desert, and left there to be devoured by the wild beasts. But only five days had elapsed since her ' departure when the charming young princess returned to'the palace upon the back of a magnificent lion. Then the stepmother advised the Em peror to send the princess to the sum mit of a very high mountain inhabited only by wild eagles and ferocious con dors. But again this time the wretch ed stepmother was fooled, for on the fourth day Yama-Mal returned on the wings of an Immense eagle. The empress was very angry, but re solved as she was to banish the prin cess from Toklo, she exiled her to a remote and deserted shore, where she expected Yama-Mal would starve, but God again came to her succor and she was found by some fishermen, who took her In their bark and conveyed her to court. Then the cruel stepmother caused a deep well to be dug In the court yard of the palace, and one dark night she throw Tama-Mal into It and had it se curely covered with a heavy marble slab. Once more, however, a new and won derful miracle saved the young prin cess. On the sixth day after her Inter ment the Emperor, while walking In the court yard, observed a vivid light which glittered through the cracks on the floor. He ordered the well to be opened, and his astonishment was great when he beheld his daughter. The empress then consulted a wizard, and he advised her to lock the prin cess In the trunk of an old tree and cast Into the sea, which was done. Nine days after a ship of the Mikado found the floating tree and rescued the princess, but this time she had suffered for so long that she died. As soon as she had expired she me- tamqrphosed herself Into a butterfly, and the next day she changed Into a silkworm,, which devoured with great avidity the green leaves of the trees. One day It did not eat, and died; but five days after (or a period equal to that spent by the princess in the des ert) It came back to life. Soon, how ever, It died again, and this time It did not move for a period equal to that spent by the young girl on the summit of the mountain. Then, when the silkworm came back to life again, it was surrounded by a beautiful aureola of light. It laid lta eggs under this aureola, and the next day many baby worms, each with an auerola around its body, were eating with avidity the green leaves of the tree. One day all the fields of Japan ap peared covered with silk, the product of the work of the million descend ants of the beautiful Princess Yama- Mal. THE WEATHER. LOCAL FORECAST.
