New York. Sept. 24.—At the opening
of the local cotton market there was
heavy selling, based on the weak ca
bles, but also some good buying, a
part of which at least was credited to
■pinners. First prices were 5 to 9
points lower, but the buying men
tioned and‘Some bull support steadied
the list after the call.
Th© Liverpool market was decidedly dis
couraging to the friends of cotton tbla
morning. It was due to come a1*out un
changed. whereas prices at 12:30 were some
6 points lower on futures, while spot was
marked down Snolnta to 5.47d for middling
Ortober-Norcmber.

IN NAVAL STORES
Savannah, Gn., Sept. 24.—Spirits turpen
tine opened the week steady nt 60tf?6144c nnd
dosed firm nt 6144c. The closing price really
represented gain, ns small snle* had been
made nt 0044c on the eloslug day of the pre
vious week. The climb was really from
6044c to 6144©. Tuesday the price readied
61c, around which figure It hung until the
dose on Thursday, which was 44c higher.
At the dose of the market today price*
were firm at 61«4c, but In the late trading
hour a weakness was evident. 8nlea were
mode itoth nt 61c nnd 6144c. while some fac
tor* declined the lower price nnd some re
ceived no bid*. Price* will hardly go l»e-
low 61c for the present week, nnd muy go
on considerably higher. Value* are lower
than the aame time last year by over 2
cent*.
Tho rosin market dosed the week with
changes In some grade* from the opening,
the pale* being generally higher nnd the
medium* fllghtly lower. The offering* dur
ing the week were divided among a number
of buyer*. The exporter* known ns the
"combine" were hammering tho market
early In the week, but later Independent
buyers blocked this program nnd bid higher.
The receipts continue slightly under Inst
year. The statistlenI position of spirit* Is
good for a farther rise, hat ta the present

at advanced prices.
The heavy receipt* of apples have served

falling off In price* for all grade* and va
rieties. Reliable Information from the prin

that the crop for the present season has
