J. Price, the negro postmaster at
Brownsville, has been staying at the
Jail of his own volition. He was being
held on the charge of dealing out arms
and ammunition to the negroes of that
suburb, but shortly after hIs arrest the
county police searched his premises and
found nothing which would warrant
this charge .being formally registered
against him. He preferred the Jail as
a safer place than home, how’ever.

Afanlla, Sept. 27.—Three towns were
totally destroyed and four other towns
damaged by n typhoon that swept over
Cagayan valley. In the northern part
of the Island of Luxon. The loss of
life was slight.
It Is announced here that 14,000 fives
were lost and $$,000,01)0 damage caused
by the typhoon at Hongkong on Sep
tember IS.

arrested and placed under bonds last
night by Sheriff IV. \V. Woodruff, to

sault upon I. E. Watson, clerk of the
United States circuit court. The dif
ficulty which terminated In the al
leged assault occurred late In the aft
ernoon In thp rotunda of the court
house and created considerable excite

ing of the Haberaham County Fair
Monday morning was a booming suc
cess. The opening address was deliv
ered by Colonel I. C. Wade. In the
morning an elocution contest was made
between the representatives of the dif
ferent towns of the county. Miss Eva
Bums, of Cornelia, Ga„ was the suc
cessful contestant, and carried off the
medal.
In the afternoon LeRoy Suddeth, of
Cornelia High School, won the medal
In the oratorical contest.
In the physical culture contest Miss
Phllbrtc won first prise.
On Tuesday morning a very Interest
ing and entertaining lecture was deliv
ered by Banker W. S. Wltham. A con
cert was given In the school auditorium

Charleston, 8. C., Sept. ' 271—Five
hundred Immigrants are expected to be
landed In Charleston by way of the
North German Lloyd line steamer Wlt-
teklnd In two or three weeks. Com-
mlsloner Watson is now In Europe ar
ranging to send the Immigrants to
South Carolina. Dutch, Germans and
Belgians will make up the bulk of the
number. They, will for the most part
only pass through Charleston, and will
make their way to the mills of the up
per part of the atate and to farm lands.
