POLITICS IN THE WE8T.
By Sidney C. Tapp.
The Bryan sentiment Is still growing In
this western country. In the last few day#
I have been through Indiana, Illlnoim
Missouri, Nebraska and now Into Colorado,
and It Is Bryan everywhere. It Is remark
able to me the change In public sentiment
The people—the great masses—seem to
have reached that point where party lines
are disregarded—It If principle that they
want—the enforcement of law and order
against commercial anarchy and piracy of
the trusts and combines—the oil trust the
coal trust, the Iron trust, the sugar trust,
the tobacco trust and the greatest of all*
the railroad trust, etc.
There are only five men that public sen
timent will nt nil stand for In the next
election, If public opinion remains ns It Is.
First, William J. Bryan; second. Theodore
Roosevelt; third, LaFollette. of Wisconsin;
fourth, Joseph W. Folk, of Missouri, and
fifth, William R. Ilearst, of New York.
If nubile opinion remains as It Is, II
ould be folly for either party to go^be
yond the five men as candidates—the pea
pie are determined.
Tile other day while passing through IJ1I
nols, I said to n judge on the train, "What
was the Republican majority In your state
for Roosevelt over Parker.’ 1 "Three hun*
dred and five thousand," was the reply.
"How will your state go If Bryan Is nomi
nated?" I asked. "A hundred thousand
for Bryfn,” was the reply. "How do you
account for this .change?’ 1 I asked. "The
people see that what he told them ten
years ago |g coming true and look upon
him ns the man to carry out what Roose
velt 4wr* begun during this administration
In destroying commercial anarchy,” was
the reply.
Oil tne same train was a Iqndlng business
man nnd a life-long Republican from
Kansas—Ills brother Is a leading Judge on
the bench In Indlnna. I snid to blm:
"What about Kansas, If Bryan Is nomi
nated.” “lie will carry It from twenty-
thls Is one time I am going to
Democratic ticket and my feelings are but
the expressions of thousands of other life
long Republicans In my state," continued
In my tpnr through Nebraska I found
ie people proud of Bryan, nnd both Re-
iblfcans nnd Democrats seem to agree
iat the state will go for Bryan by u large
majority this time. They believe he Is
going to \te. nominated nnd elected this
time, and a state pride seems to be aroused.
And let me here say that Nebraska Is a
great state. As far ns the eye can' se*».
the growing corn, waving wheat and
lowing herds greets the vision everywhere.
While passing along the streets In St.
Louis the other day I passed a book store.

"It’s no good," said the stranger

"Now you come to mention It," mut

thoughts.
"But I’m going," th# other added has
