Latham, a young white man whose home Is In Chestnut street, near the old barracks, is held prisoner In the police station accused of stealing hand-painted china, and other goods, valued at $300, from Dr. J. S. Hurt, In Inman Fark. Latham Is a carpenter and has been doing work about the Hurt residence of late. It is charged that he carried away the missing goods nt different times. The china belongs to Mrs. Hurt and Is valued at about $30. The cloth ing and other stolen articles run up the total to about $300. Latham was arrested by Detective Connally. He admits taking the china, but denies any knowledge of the other goods. Some of the booty has been re covered. While working at a table, an overhead pipe used to carry the hot fluid mass from the large vats burst and she was de luged by the stream that issued forth. The young woman was taken to the city hospital, where it was stated she could live but a few hours. Charlie Henderaon, the negro ser vant bound over by Recorder Broyles Thursday morning on charges of bur glary and larceny, will have to face additional charges of this character. Plain Clothes Officer Starnes, who has been working on the case, Thurs day afternoon recovered two trunks and a suitcase, said to have been stolen by Henderson. One of the trunks was found In the rear of 276 M’est Mitchell street and‘the other In the rear of 19$ South Forsyth street. The officer has also recovered a stickpin stolen some time ago from the residence of Mrs. E. Barkley. 173 Juniper street. When Woods awoke Friday morning nt his home In Darktown he found un der his door a card bearing this omi nous thregt: “Jim M’oods: If you go to court this morning we will get you and put out your light.” There was no signature to the card. Notwithstanding the threat, Woods ap peared In court In the presence of crowd of Darktown negroes and testi fied for the prosecution. He saw none of the disorder himself, but had fur nished the police with a list of names of negroes alleged to have taken part. The names had been given to Woods by another negro, who said he waa afraid to furnish them to the police, fearing the wrath of the negroes. “I told him." said Woods, "to give me the names and I would turn them over to the police, that I wanted to help preserve order, and that I was not afraid of the whole gang.” Other Negro 8cered. The other negro, who conducts a bar ber shop in Darktown, was evidently scared and in court denied he gave the names to M r oods. He admitted that threats were made against him Mon day afternoon when he tried to stop some disorder. All of the witnesses summoned by Honolulu, H. Devoe, of 142 Walton street, a collector, who was roughly handled in the vicinity of Har ris and Butler streets. Devoe was chased by a crowd of negroes, which stoned him, shot at him several times, and finally cornered him In the store of H. Bell, a negro, 316 Butler street. The negroes swarmed into the store after him, but he finally managed to escape through a rear door and ran for some distance in a rain of bullets. Hit by One Bullet. One bullet struck him on the arm and another graxed his head. After*Devoe ran out of the store, sev eral of the negroes turned their at tention to Bell’s cash drawer and robbed it. In defending his property the merchant used a cleaver and cut Son Morrow, a negro, In the back and on the arm. Morrow was bound over to the supe rior court under $1,000 bond on charges of assault with Intent to murder and robbery. He was the only negro who could be connected with the Devoe as sault. Torn Morant, another negro, was bound over under $1,000 bond on tte charge of larceny after trust. He wat not Identified as one of the rioters, but was held accused of stealing from A. W. Montgomery, Ala., Sept. 28.—The wind and rainstorm which visited the South, beginning M’ednesday night, and which Is now in progress, did consid erable damage to communication be tween Montgomery % and Southern points. The Southern Bell Telephone Company reported no communication further south than Greenville, about 40 miles from Montgomery, and the M’estern Union* Postal and Louisville and Nashville train dispatcher had no communication farther than Fort De posit, 30 miles from this city. This was a great disadvantage to the Louisville nnd Nashville officials be cause they could not keep up with the trains. AH came In many hours late. The storm began here about midnight M’ednesday and continued to Increase. The wind reached a velocity of 36 miles per hour.
