st Brunn. He was an art student, so
poor that he lived on the round loaves
of black bread that were sent from
home to his peasant roommate.
Mucha'a artistic hand rvoa Intrusted
with marking oft In chalk the exact
share of each, and thay used pork
grease for butter.
".Nevertheless such was his muslrnt
gift nnd his personal charm that he
was in demand among certain social
circles ut Nlkolsberg. Clothes were as
scarce as food. A tailor presented
himself one day, took Mucha’a mans -
ure without a word and sent him n
P«l> of trousers. Long years after
wards the artist found out that the
order for those trousers came from a
young jady. The legend does not tell
whether this young lady became Mine.
Mucha, it does, however, furnish fur
ther romantic near facts.
'Disheartened and homesick, the
poor student started back to his na
tive Moravia. Ill* funds gave out and
him stranded nt a village Inn. The
mnkeeiier and his wife had compas
sion on him. They said: ‘Let's tell
our cum about him.' Now, the lord
of the vlllage. Count Khuen Emmasof,
happened to be rebuilding his ancestral
rnstle. He took the wanderer In, kept
mm for d year painting decorations on
the walls of his. salons and then sent
mm to Paris to continue his art stud
ies.
'•In Paris there was again a long
period of obscure struggle. Then one
day Hnrah Bernhardt needed a poster
for a new play In a tearing hurry. Htie
telephoned her order to the Lemerrter
Lithograph Company, anil, of course,
there happened to be In the shop at the
moment a young Bohemian artist who
had done a few Jobs for the firm. The
manager gave him the commission. In 1 -
cause Its could not put his hand on nny
one else at a moment's notice, and
Mucha worked against time. A tew
days later the billboards of Paris bios-
somed out with a flower-crowned
princess robed In d stiff magnificence,
of nxure and gold, who boro a palm
and the name "Glsinonda." The public
promptly fell In love with her. The
critics praised ber creator—for In
Paris the critics recognize a true sculp
tor. even though his skill Is expended
In modeling a copper cent, or true
painter, even though his talent Is set
to advertising a brand of tobacco.
We In America still regard Mucha
ns a poster designer, yet he has de
signed stained glass windows, executed
mural decorations (among others those
of the new Bing theater In Vienna and
of the Bosnia and Herzegovina pavil
ions at the Paris Exposition), painted
large historical canvases. Illustrated
choice’ books,' of* which the huAt' noted
are Robert de Klers’ romantic tale of
•Ilse’ ami Selgnebos' 'Scene* From
German History.' More recently still
he has turned his attention tc religion
pointing, such as panels of 'Purer Nos
ter,' of 'The Seven Mottal Sins' and
