This is an ex tremely high figure to be set, even for this season of th* year, and little doubt was left that the Bank of England would follow suit tomorrow with an In crease In Its rate. The tone In the security market was tame. The English Investments wore steady and American stocks, despite the heavy carry-over set for the fort nightly settlement, were quoted frac tionally above our closing parity. Tba local shares opened strong and once more the feature of the dealings was the concentration of the buying on a few stocks with some really notable re sults. Pennsylvania, Smelters and the other favorites of yesterday's trading made further gains at the outset and wero then abandoned to realizing, while the Pacific stocks, St. Paul and North western were taken In hand and bid up smartly. The basis for the movement in Union Pacific .was the August report of the company, issued at mlddny, showing a handsome Increase both in gross and net, and furthermore the expecation that the annual report, soon to be made public, will set at rest all doubt as to the ability to maintain the 10 per cent dividend rate. The stock market opened irregular. Locomotive, Union Pacific, Lead and General Electric advanced 1-2; Smelt ing 3-8 nnd Pennsylvania, Republic Steel and Canadian Pacific 1-8. Cop per, Baltimore and Ohio, BrookI.v n Rapid Transit and the Steel shares were unchanged. Colorado Fuel off 1-2 and Atchison and Reading 1-5. The stock market was generally strong again today, with speculation on the bull side confined to a few stocks, In which the bfiylng was con centrated, leaving the bulk of the mar ket without special feature.
