»w York, Oct. 15.—Following:
lharp advance In LIverpool ( the local
| cotton market opened 22 to 29 points
I higher, with traders excited.. The up
turn in the English market and the
| strength here was due to heavy rains In
prtfl of Texas oVer Sunday. Prices
bore scored new high levels for the
prwent bull movenienC attracting some
liberal profit-taking in quarters, hut not
much short selling.
The Liverpool market was very wild
«nd excited at the opening this morn
ing. reports of rains In Texas over Sun-
I day causing extreme nervousness among
the shorts, and at the same time in
duced liberal support by the bulls.
That market was expected tq show
an advance of about 10 points, whereas
initial prices were 26 1-2 to 27 1-2
points above the closing figures of last
Saturday. The close was 20 points up.
Spot sales were 7,000 bales at 26
points advance, making middling 6.69.
The market was called firm.
New York opened 22 to 29 points
higher in response to Liverpool's show-
Ing and sold up to the best prices of
the present bull movement. At the
high point there was liberal realising,
on which the market slowly sagged,
th« close being 8 to 18 points higher.
Xffss Giles makes condition 68.4,
[ which represents a crop of ■ 11,400,000.
In New Orleans spots are quiet, but
firm. It Is said that there is hardly
any cotton for sale, and that every bale
Is purchased as quick as It arrives.

TRADING BASIS
ALL OUT OF GEAR
New Orleans. Oct. IS.—'The Timet Demo
crat saya: ‘The end of the week found
the nice adjustment of the cotton trade
little more than a memory, and the talent
and actual cotton merchant hedged about
by many limitations and beset by many
fears and donbti. The violence of recant
duetuatlona baa up§et the customary chan-
nela of trade, and rendered difficult evan
the moat ordinary of transactions. Conse
quently. complications have piled up rather
than diminished. On the face of the prop
osition. the trading basis la all out of gear.
Apparently, the October option may with
profit be sMd agalust spot cotton. Aa a
matter of fact, desirable cotton Is ou the
excellent enough demand to command
high premiums, hence the holder of long
contracts has only low grade tenders to
fear. On the other hand, the man who
would like to deliver tne goods on October
hesitates to sell for fear that the grade
difference* may l>e turned agalnat the only
aort of cotton he cares to unload In that
way, because of the relative aeardty of
the better grades. Meanwhile, other far-
tors are at work, and the uncertainty at
tending 1»oth the snot and the future mar-
keta has so affected trading that every
day hedging operations, legitimate and or
dinary Mfe enough for all practice! pur-
a. now Involve too much possibility of
for the welfare of the actual cotton
i trade. Nor la a satisfactory remedy to lie
easily found until the cotton market shall
have adjusted Itself to the new order of
things. A careful analysis of recent events
brings to light a direct chain of potential
Influences originating In the overthrow
of the middleman's control when the Houth
began to shake off the’yoke._ Tho middle
man being n very necessary l>art of the
cotton business, confusion has followed the
shlftlug of price-making power. Hnturday's
cotton market was aided by n forecast of
ralna aud cold wenther over Texas nnd
