view of youth.
Wherefore, McAlister, after some
three pretty years, dropped away—was
blotted out. He paid with the penalty
of a weak heart and a residue of a few
odd pounds where once were hundreds,
Let It be said In Justice to McAlister
that he went straight and clean while
he was running; second, that he was
crushed financially by a manner of
sharp dealing that was peculiarly nasty
(onthe part of one called Bryant); third,
that when she knew he had dropped
a girl held out her-arms for him, vain
ly, till they were quite tired. This last
was, perhaps, the greatest of the three.
McAlister went to live In Brussels—
Cite de la Chaussee. I know of only
two more places more like hell for a
man who has known and loved un
crooked streets and men and ways to
live In. There—even bread Is a thing
for which you grope eagerly when you
have really felt the whip of Chance—
he acquired patiently, with mourning,
and for a time In utter terror, a ca
pacity for the work of salves.
Strangely enough, one of his burdens
helped him greatly In bearing of
the others. This was his abiding hate
of Bryant, who (chiefly) bad brought
him there. Sitting ot an evening In his
room, while below Madame, the Laun
dress, shuffled noisily on her way to
and from the long washing shed, he
went through the "downing" of Bryant
methodically, over and over again.
Some three schemes for his revenge
(out of about thirty-six laborious oth
ers) he put down on paper.
When the Brussels Exhibition came—
this Is told of a time gone by—McAlis
ter got a Job at one of the stalls, not
far frbm where they handed you the
damp half-penny paper after Its orderly
riot through a city of machines. Mc
Alister had curious experiences there,
for many English came to the exhibi
tion, and some that he had known
passed him. And the eight of them
put flame to his trodden soul. He
would go back, by God; and for a
month he would flare and live again,
then flicker and go. It was on the
very day he vowed this to himself that
two Englishmen, strangers, stopped for
a long time near his stall, talking con
fidentially of -two things, and one of
them was Bryant and his afralra. They
took no notice of McAlister, because he
was a Frenchman; but McAlister was
shouting In his heart. For their talk
of Bryant’s present position was the
key to the second of his three schemes.
McAlister worked with Infinite toll,
all day and all night, varying this with
all day and half the night, to get money
for the chapter that should be his own.
To his credit, again, there was one fel
low at home to whom he might have
written, but he would not. If he had
written he would have learned that his
friend, was dead, but this does not alter
11 So he' came home. It was not so
long, after all, since he had dropped,
and he was not sanguine, but he reck
oned to find, any, half a doxen whom he
had known. He found more than that,
and he wished he had not spoken to
them. Big men, now, were some of
th Cattlln was a fellow he had liked
neutrally In the dead time, never par
ticularly caring for him or desiring
his company. It was Cattlln who took
McAlister home, pitying and wondering
at his drawn face and the Are In his
eyes. It was Cattlln who bucked him
up and gave alt his time to him and his
project concerning Bryant, which Mc
Alister could not work himself, but
with which Cattlln entirely sympa
thised: It was Cattlln, In short, who,
Driving.-as I have said, tried hard to
make this shadow of the old McAlister
feel himself a man. But It was not to
be. Cattlln failed.
Wonderful to relate, the girl might
have done It. The girl would have
done It, for, although she had dropped
her arms, she was perfectly ready to
stretch them out again for one man—
McAlister. So that If Cattlln had
known her, he could have worked It
eaelly. But he did not know. Mc
Alister never told him. McAlister was
always telling himself he would find
out the girl and go to her; but as a
matter of fact, after his rebuffs from
other friends, he was afraid. So he
kept on telling himself that he would
And out where she was tomorrow. But
when tomorrow came he did not stir to
try and find her, but kept silent. Per
haps the daylight frightened him.
All honor to Cattlln: he did not give
up trying for a month. ^
Cattlln took the stairs three at a
time and the handle clattered as ho
flung’himself at the door. McAlister
sat In the streaming path of the sun
light, his arms upon the table and his
head upon his arms.
"It's right!" cried Cattlln. "McAlls-
ter. old man, you were right In what
you said. Bryant's broken—broken In
to little pieces—and It’s all come round
for you once more, old chap. Every
body will know It was Bryant, and not
you' Why. the beggar’s gone to sleep.
Wake up. McAlister!"
But McAlister walked gladly with a
friend—and the name of the fflend was
Death.
