opened generally heavy and lower. Traders
were bearish nnd were Inclined to sell
stocks on the theory that they had failed
to advance on good news like the in
creased Norfolk dividend rind might conss-
quentlr expect them to work lower. The
old dividend rumors have been revived

of business. Traders were scalping small

tive traders were not on the floor at all.

“There Is a great deal of talk about
whnt figures will be bearish nnd what bull
ish as to the amount of cotton ginned up
to October 18,“ snld one of the best-posted

to warp the judgment ot the market to suit

ing strong and higher early, but finally
yielding to selling pregsure and toilng
all the early gains. Bantlment In the
pit at the close was confused. Com
wet relatively firm on talk of export
business. Oata were dull and firm.
Trade In provisions waa large with
ahort covering the feature In lard and
riba.
At the end prices were l-8c lower to
1-lc up for wheat, i-g to l-tO<-Jc
higher for com, oata unchanged and
Jg products 6c lower to 5c higher.
Argentine wheat shipments for the
week were estimated at 174,000, against
* >166,000 bushels last year. Com

000 bushels, against 1,146,000 bushels
last year. /
Clearances were large, especially
from New York, the total wheat and
flour evports being 047,000 bushels:
corn 2(4,000 bushels, oata 11,000.

bushels oats.
