GEORGIAN. - SIR EDWARD CONAN DOYLE, During the discussion of the vltnl urjtlon a* to whether the English n ,tlon l« becoming less religious, one frea t f*!J**y runs through a great o»nj' of the statements which I have iraril and seen, and that Is the postu- W e that any form of ritual. Including ,l, e ritual of going to a large stone building for the purpose of communion wll l, the Great Unseen, has any bear- log upon true The lesson which life has taught me u that It has none. I nave known most admirable people .ho did these practices, and I have known most wicked ones. I have known most admirable people who did - ot do auch things and I have known most wicked ones. Never yet have, known a person who was good because he went to'^hureh, or evil because ho did not. And yet, by n grent many Mop le. such practices are taken as a C It whether religion Is wi wnnlnw or in creasing. There Is no relatlon^between lh The true test of progress in true re, Uglon Is: (1) Is there a kinder or broader view of euch subjects, enabling sil men of all creeds to live In amtty , n d charity? (2) Are the criminal statistics better? (3) Are the drink -turns better, showing that man la acquiring greater animal self-control? (41 Are the Illegitimacy returns better, showing the same thing? (5) Is there -ore reading, more demand for lec- lures, more Interest In science,' show ing that the mind Is gaining upon the hod, :' (6) Are the savings banks re turning* bettsr, showing thrift and ssif-denial? (7) Are the trade returns better, showing greeter Industry and efficiency? (8) Are there more charita ble Institutions, and dose man show more clearly his senes of duty toward •u. loirnp nntmall? There Is an aggressIve form of re ligion calling Itself the Dogmatic Faith, which has done far more harm to the human race than pestilence or famine. Directly to Its door must be laid not only all the bloodstained history of Mo hammedanism, but-all the murderous doings which have In turn disgraced every sect of Christianity. V In the name of CHrlst. the Apostle of Peace, thle dreadful school of thought, within a few centuries of His death, brought about such quarrels and such murders as had never been heard of In pngan days. over the Homolouslsn question, at 1 theological point depending upon a diphthong, It hae been reckoned that a hundred thousand people loet their lives, champions and victims of Faith. The Crusades, the murders of the Alblgenses and ot the Cevennes. the Thlriv Years' War. the Inquisition, the outrages nt Catholics on Protestants, the no less detestable outrages of Pro- teetsnta on Catholics, the persecutions oI non-rnnformlsts by the Church, the persecutions of Quakers by the non conformists, the manifold domestic tragedies and tyrannies, embittering the lives of counties* numbers—surely when all these are considered, the read ,r must admit that Faith,- In the post tive aggressive sense, has wrought more mischief than famine or peetl knee. All sect* have been milled by men e! the same acrid frame of mind, and have incurred the same bloodgutltl teas. I only know four cults—the original Buddhists, the Quakers, the Unitarians and the Agnostics—who can, I think, uy that they have no blood upon their hinds. Certainly the Atheists can not, for their excesses In France—In the Revolution and also In 1870—have been is bad as those of the churches. And what has been, the root ot It til? Saying you believe what your mind can not grasp and what your free reason woujd frequently reject. A mikes his proofless assertion and calls ll his faith. B has the right to do the urne. Then A and B hate each other with a holy hatred, and there Is the I tpltome of the blackest chapter of the klitory of the world. We who are like shipwrecked mariners upon this lllile raft of a world, moving upon the dee of I he Infinite ocean, have enough lo do to live kindly among ourselves, without quarreling bitterly about that *hlch Is beyond the horlson. Perhaps you ear that even In these tery words I myself show want of re ligious charity. But surely It is not *» If the Catholic finds the pope, or the Anglican the Bishop, or the non conformist the minister a help upon «> path, then In every case It Is a good thin*—if it causes that man to be a setter, more noble human creature. Jwry form of belief Is admirable that •»« that. But when It turn* to want •f charity and the Vvlllng of those ™> have other methods, then It Is a pity twentieth century exhibition of met which ranks In history among the Wrest and moat bloodthlraty crime*. „ IMMANUEL BAPTIST—Sunday school at 9:15 e. m.
