Several of them also routed the hoc* retary of state out of a warm bed Tuesday night. So anxious did some of them become to duck that $60 penalty that applies after Wednesday, that they began fir ing returns and dollar bills at the sec retary by registered mail. Secretary Cook’s willing to stay at his office In the capitol all day. but he does insist on going home at night. So, finding the cnpltol all durk and abandoned Tuesday night. Uncle Sam’s special delivery messengers hunted out the Cook domicile. First one came at 11 o’clock, and after clanging the door bell until half the neighbors were up to see the trouble, Secretary Cook went down to see what sort of a cataclasm had taken place. He was handed a registered com munication, containing a corporation registration. Grumbling over being routed out of a warm bed, he retired ■^At 1 1 o’clock* Wednesday morning there was another strenuous jangling of the bell. Shivering and not .in the best of humor, the secreary answered and found a eoupte of corporation re turns. A Stream of Dollars. But the grand rush began at his office In the capitol early Wednesday morning. A steady stream of Atlan tans hurried In with properly filled blanks and dollar bills. "See by last night s capers that this Is the last day, so register me quick,” said one excited Individual. And the postman was almost stag gering with his burden of mall for the secretary of state. Nearly every letter contained a dollar, many several dol lars. indications lire that by 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon the total number of registrations will reach 3,000, Two basobnll associations have reg istered—the Atlanta club and the Ll- tbonla Baseball Association. The ques tion arises as to whether ail the clubs in the Southern and South Atlantic leagues arc not liable for this eor- iration tax. Il is Secretary Cook’s opinion that they are,* since all of them do business In this state. If the Urn* is drawn it means thut Memphis, Little Rock, New Orleans and all the others will have to ci>me across with the slmoleons or get In trouble at the besinning of next season. The posttuff of quotation* on local stock* and bonds is expected to prove to be a feature of unusual interest and importance to commercial men Inter ested in the proposed board of trade now in process of organization under the influence and protection of the Chamber of Commerce. This feature of the exchange was discussed but little at ihe recent meet ing held In the offices of the Atlanta Compress Company, but its impor tance was readily recognized by those In a position to realize the value of the ‘There’s a Reason” for POSTUM Information to be furnished. While only tentative plans and arrangements looking toward the organization of the exchange were talked over the success of the movement l» practically assured. So official Information concerning local stocks cHn be secured without difficulty. Only those directly Interest ed In particular stocks cpuld furnish anything like reliable quotations. It I* said that If this Information was easy to obtain local trading would increase and prove benettetaj to local Indus tries and corporations. The law authorizes a hoard where this Information might he posted, but prohibits any speculative dealing In the exchange. This, however, would not Interfere with the success of the ex change. "My bleu Is go have this proposed hoard of trade Include idl Information possible that might he ofTalue to every branch of trade in tile city, from the ainnllest produce dealer to the big cot ton buyer." sahl a local broker. "It might carry, the same Information car ried by the wire houses. It must he authentic and will, of course, be guar anteed by the i'll amber Of Commerce. "There Is no place within my knowl edge where quotations on local stocks enn be readily secured. Atlanta Is be hind Augusta on till* point, because In that town almost anyone Interested in stocks ran get quotations on any locnl stock* within a few seconds. We need something of this sort.
