THE WORLD AND THE LOVER,
(Richard Le Gnllientic in November
Smart Set.)
The whole world Is proverbially said
tOj^oyc a lover. Like most proverbial
statements, this one Is exceedingly
o|**n to question. In fact, ull the evi
dence seems flatly the other way. on
what data, one wonders, dfd the old
proverb-maker base his dictumV Sure
ly not on the great love stories. The
world, with Its nppHite for vicarious
excitement, like* well enough to watch
the tragic spectacle of a great passion.
Incapable of great feeling itself, it
thrills to tho drama of them in others.
It even applauds thNr lawlessness, nnd
canonizes their audacity. All the same,
It will not raise a Anger to help while
the story Is in the making; but, on
the contrary, does everything In Its
power to persecute and Impede. The
moment Romeo and Juliet arc safely
dead in each other's arms, the world
Is voluble with its sympathy—but not
till It is quite sure tlmt its sympathy
<'un bo of no possible service to the
lovers. While sympathy would be of
some use, the v.orhl—which Is the em
bodied cowardice and cant of Immunity

ulet, seniors, if the lover* win, well
and good. No lias ever denied that the
world loves success—though It hn» al
ways consistently done It* ivor»t to
prevent It. Ye*, the world love* sue-
essful hive, as It fawns on anything
that has conquered It. it love* also
pity tlmt cost* it nothing. But that It
love* a lover, for hive of love, 1* simply
not true. If it were true, there would
probably have been no love stories, for
ihe drama of love has mostly come of
the conflict* between the lover* and
the world. They had to count the
Id well lost to win each other.. It
was so in the days of Trte*tan and
Jseult, «n<f so It still Is In the days of
Rudolph of Bavaria.
