Thirty years ago this month marked the turning point In the reconstruction movement In South Carolina for wrest ing control from the Radical and Car pet-Bagger element, and the head of that movement was Wade Hampton. Things came to a crisis when some thousands of determined men formed at the old fair grounds In the northern suburbs and marched down Main street under command of Oeneral John D. Urattqn. There has been three generation! of Wade Hamptons. The first was Colonel Wade Hampton, of the Revolutionary army, who was also one of the wealth iest planters In South Carolina. The second wus General Andrew Jackson's aide In the war of 1812, and carried the news of the battle of New Orleans to Washington, riding the same horso all the way from. New Orleans to Colum bia, at an uverqge of over seventy miles a day.
