a white boy, has been arrested by
County Officers W’hltfleld and Polk on
the ‘charge of having fired the shot.
Miss Ferrell Is the daughter of <3.
F. Ferrell and resides with her father.
While making up the bed In her room
at about « o'clock Wednesday morn
ing she heard a loud crash behind her
and Immediately after something
.whizzed over her head at a distance
of about three Inches and lodged In
the wall beyond. She turned and found
that the window behind her had been
broken and on examination of the wall
found a lead ball lodged there. The
ball had been' Bred- with terrific force
and the lead was smashed out of shape.
Miss Ferrell had stooped Just before
the shot was fired and It Is probable
but for this that the ball would have
struck her In the head or neck.
County Officers Whitfield and Polk
Investigated the case and found eye
witnesses who saw a boy fire the
shot from the 1 rear of a river car
,-wlth a flipper. They placed young
Wynne under arrest and he at first
i denied knowledge of the shooting. He
Is said to have later admitted firing
the shot and he was lodged In Jail on
the charge of malicious mischief.

whipped In the face with thorn bushes,
shot at and driven from her home.
On the night of July 3, 1806, Mrs
Coburn was vtstted by two white men
and -whipped, pistol shots were fired
Into the door of her house and she
fled from the county and was In hiding
for several months.
Shortly after she was whipped Ollle
Ponder and Lum West were arrested,
charged with the crime. They were
tried last February, but a mistrial re
sulted. At that time 6tr*. Coburn was
In hiding and all the evidence was cir
cumstantial.
When the case was called a second
time the prosecuting witness, Mrs. Co
burn. was on hand. She identified West
and Ponder as the men who whipped
her.

PREACHER PLEADS GUILTY
AND GOES TO PENITENTIARY

Hpartanburg, 8. C., Nov. 21.—Rev.
Doole Davis, a Ytdllnesa preacher,
pleaded guilty to the charge of obtaining
goods under fnlse prestenses In the
criminal court here. Rev. Davis. was
arrested some time ago on the charge
of obtaining a horse and buggy from a
livery stable at Clifton and driving Into
North Carolina and disposing of the
turnout.
He was sentenced to serve a term In
the state penitentiary at hard labor for
one year and pay a fine or <100.
There was a charge of larceny after
trust against the minister, but this was
not pressed.
