York, Nov. 27.—“I have noth- duct In tYils matter than I have for
Ing to say to this except that Mr.

and Impertinent inference without
foundation In fact.”
This statement was made today by
Bishop Henry t\. Potter, when asked
If he would make a reply to Kdward
M. Shepard’s attack upon him In a
statement Issued by the lawyer ,In the
case of the Rev. A. S. Crapsey, who
resigned from the Episcopal church.
In his statement Mr. Bhepard re

Dr. Crapsey to appeal from the decision
of the court of review, and then he
mode this attack on Bishop Potter:
“l have more respect* for their con-
that of the senior bishop of New York
in the attack which he has seen tit
to make upon Dr. Crgpaey. •
"Dr. Crapsey has not lived with the
rich; he Is not served today by a
butler and a 'second man* and a foot
man and a coachman: he Is not one
of the chief figures at the dinner tables
of the private pulUces of this city; he Is
neither used to nor fond of sybaritic
elegance.
”Dr. Crapsey does not hold to the
rule that the minister’s contract is one
for a money price—'so many dollars,
such and such an output of doctrine.’”
Mr. Hhepard further said that if the
bishop would make It a point to ascer
tain the doctrine the priests of his
diocese were preaching he would find
many guilty of greater heresy than

POPE FAVORS PEACE
AS TO FRENCH LAW
Where is G. W. Wellington, the blind
panhandler who was the cause of May
or Woodward gettlng-on his card-writ
ing garments?
That Is a question officials of the As-
elated Charities would like to have
answered.
When he was arraigned In pollc
•purt Monday afternoon for begging
n Atlanta streets his case was t
tlnued so that lie could avail hltnself of
the offer made by Secretary J. C. Lo
gan. of the Associated Charities, and
have Ills eye operated upon to get
back his lost sight that he might earn
a living.
He was to have appeared Tuesday
morning to #o to a specialist, but he
didn’t show up. -And there Is every
evidence that he has left Atlanta, left
for other fields where panhandlers have
an easy time anil where the people are
not educated up to this sort of thing.
In other words, there Is every evi
dence now that Wellington prefcis
blindness and anywhere from |3 to $15
a day profit from his plaintive tunes
ground out.of his hand organ to sight
and a’chance to take that Job he talked
about which paid $60 a month.
Blindness and big money seem more
preferable to him than sight and ordi
nary wages.
While In Atlanta Wellington mad3
Ills headquarters at the Bnlvatlon
Army, nt 72 Murlettu street, but he left
there Monday afternoon, after he had
been arraigned In police court and had
his case continued so that he coull
consult the specialist secured by the
Associated Charities.
Inquiry there Tuesday morning
brought out this fact and Inmates of
the place said he packed up his organ
Monday afternoon and said It was
other parts for Ills. This In connec
tion with the fact that he has not been
seen on the streets, and also that he
failed to keep his engagement with
Secretary Logan, of the Associated
Charities Tuesday morning, leads to
the belief that he has hit the trail. And,
too, they say at the Salvation Army
headquarters that Wellington took an
Atlanta man with him—a partner so
to speak, and one who can do the lead
ing around and manage the business.
“It ain’t so had,” remarked a man at
the headquarters, who looked as If he
had had considerable experience riding
rods and brake beams, “when a bo Is
shy a peg or has a leary fin. but one
what’s got Ills lamps out Is all In. 1
don't know f here Wellington went, hut
I think he blowed toward the North.
He had a letter from Ills mother a day
or two ago that i read for him and It
may lie that he’s gone to her. He comes
from West Virginia, and he got sore
on Atlanta. , He was a nice feller and
had money, but I’d rather be broke ns a
convict and have me lamps burning
than have coin with ’em out.”
Secretary Logatv* Is still waiting for
Wellington nnd Is only too willing to
carry out his part of the bargain and
support the blind man until he gfles to
a hospital nnd hns the operation per
formed. He made several attempts to
find Wellington Tuesday morning, but
was unsuccessful.
It was thought at first that Welling
ton intended going to Macon, as that
•tty was next on his route.
