field. Air. Winfield Is a distinguished
Presbyterian minister, • having been
from 1833-1357 chaplain to their High-

1837 to 1901 ho was pnstor of the Mel
ville Presbyterian church nt Montreal,

Scott, of the city police force, was tried
In the city court yesterday on a charge
of assault and battery upon the per
son of John O'Donnell, found guilty
and sentenced to twelve months on the
chalngang, rr lo pay a fine ol 175 and
costs.
The evidence showed that the trouble
started last Saturday night In a Wa
ter street saloon, when Scott went with
Officer Rock to make an arrest.
Scott nml O'Donnell had been good
friends previous to this time,
O'Donnell Is about 72 years old.

Palestine, Texas, Dee. 8,—The Pa
cific express car was robbed by six
men, It has been learned.
They bound tho express messenger
and threw him out of the t^pldly-
tnovlng train at Bylon Hiding, near
Iledwntfy, last Saturday night. On en
tering the express cor when nearing
Texarkana, Conductor Blair found the
car vacant,' the safe ransacked, und
the messenger's helper missing. Reach
ing Texarkana, It Is sold, the train
newsboy disappeared.
Of the five men now under arrest two
of them were taken In custody ut Cam
den, who, It Is said, were Identified hy
Messenger Orlsset when taken before
him at the company bospitul Tuesday
evening. Two other men. one of whom

Texarkana, were arrested Wednesday.
The fifth arrest Is thus of the train's
