St. Petersburg, Dec. 11.—Forty men
employed In Thornton's big factory
were drowned today while crossing the
Ice which covered the Neva.
The Ice broke as 100 men were In the
middle of the stream, but *0 of them
were able to reach the shore. Few of
the bodies have been recovered as the
rushing waters carried them down un
der the ice.

for the Eighth district agricultural col
lege, on the f»th Inst., nt Athena, It will
be remembered that Morgan county se
cured the college on n bid of 140,100,
against $39.060'from Putnam. The In
ducement from Putnam came from the
county at large and was for the cen
tral location of the schorl, near this
place.
Another bid from Putnam was made
which lias not been mentioned In the
newspaper reports. This bbl came front
Rockville school district with n view
<>f having the school located within It a
own ’borders. The district is on the
Oconee river, 14 miles from town, and
the bid submitted was as follows: $32
800 In caah; $5,000 In lands; $2,000 In
water power privileges; $2,000 In gran
ite quary privileges: $500 In telephone
privileges for 5 years; $200 In brick
yard privileges, making a total of
$41,600.
This amount represents about $2)5
for each voter In the district.

Montgomery, Ala., Dec. 11.—Fifty-
eight prisoners faced Judge W. H.
Thomas cf the criminal division of the
city court /oriuy to rccelvo sentence.
They were all convicted at the October
term of the city court.
Of this number four were convicted
of murder, one for criminal assault,
three for robbery, eighteen for grand
larceny and the others for different eff-
fenses.
Eugene Dowling, a white man
charged with criminally Assaulting his
16-year-old daughter, was sentenced
to GO years In the penitentiary.

A petition to dismiss the bank
ruptcy proceedings and the receiver,

Fuller's office In the United States cir
cuit court Tuesday morning by the
Georgiu Cotton Products Company, on
the ground thnt the plaintiffs, the Me
chanics National Hank, of New York,
Cornelius N. Bliss and others, did not
hold liens or Judgments against the
property of tho defendant company.
The petition was regarded aa a de
murrer In u consolidated action In
equity, ns both plaintiffs were Included
In the same case. Tho demurrer claims
that the selxure of the property and the
appointment of the receiver was unlaw
ful and beyond the Jurisdiction of the
circuit court, as the answer In the
original proceedings of the defendant
; showed that Its liabilities were 140,-
; 245.02, while Its assets were $262.-
i . 2an excess of assets over liabili
ties of $222.0X4.32. The demurrer will
pi ob ibly be argued next Saturday he-

terday while trying to make an escen-
aton in Barcelona.

received terrible Injuries, which caused

country yesterday, bringing 76.000 feet
of cut lumber and a large consignment
of cotton for local dealers. Captain
Peter Wag non. owner of the fleet of
river steamers plying the Coosa river
between Rome, Ga., and the lower
river, states that the river business la
better than it has ever been In its
history.

Gadsden, Ala., Dec. 11.—Large num
bers of disabled cars are being received
at the Alabama Great Southern car
shops, in this city, to he repaired.
These cars have been accumulating at
Chattanooga and other points a vault
ing the completion of the large addi
tion to the shops now being made. The
additions will be ready to begin opera
tions the first of the year, anti will
give employment to several hundred
men.

Against Motherland
Sister.
Dayton, Ohio, Deo. 11.—Collin, Oil
man, brother of Dona Gilman, the girl
who wn, murdered In till, city two
week, ago, and whoso body wa, found
among the weeds In a common, was
arrested today on a charge of being ac
cessory to tho murder. The warrant
was sworn out by William Heltxnian,
a private detective, who ha, been work
ing on the case.
The murder itself Heltsman charges
against tho mother of the young wont,
an, Mrs. S. C. Gilman, who Is now
conllned to a cot In ths Miami Valley
hospital, where, it Is said, her recovery
from the shock of her daughter's death
I, very doubtful. Because of her con
dition. the warrant sworn to by Heltx-
inan was not served upon her.
An affidavit, charging that she I, also
an accessory, wa, tiled against Fayne
Gilman; a sister of the dead girl. She
was taken Into custody. The complete
evidence which Hcltsmnn bases his
charges Is not known, but ho Intimates
he has discovered family wrangles.
Collin, Gilman wn, arrested at" hi,
mother's bedside in tho hospital. Sub
mitting to arrest, he declared thero waa
no foundation for the accusation made
ngalnst him.
A committee of flvo physicians, ap
pointed to hold an autopsy on the re
mains of the murdered girl that were
exhumed Sunday, made their report to
Coroner Kline. This autopsy, ths sec
ond haul, waa for the purpose of in
vestigating a ‘rumor that the girl Imd
died after an operation performed to
shield her name from a scandal. The
report of the physicians stated that
there was not the least ground for the
gossip.
It la thought by many that the
chargea against members of the family
were premised on the gossip contro
verted by the autopsy. The authorities
do not place reliance In Hcltzman’s
charges.

ing of tho. new secondary Industrial
school here marked nn epoch In Indus
trial education In Georgia.
The school Is the only institution of
Its kind 1n the South. The object of
the school, which was established with
tho financial assistance of the Hon.
George Foster Peabody, of New 'York,
is to educate young people between 1<
and 20 and prepare them for Intelligent
service In Industrial occupatlnhs.
While Informal, the opening was at
tended by many educators and was
■narked by a large attendance of pu
pils, many of them former operatives
In the Columbus cotton mills, out of
employment through the recently cn-'
acted child labor law.
An efficient corps of teachers of wide
experience in Industrial training Is In
charge of the school.

The craft was shipped overland from
